Rochester 2bbl how to find the year/model - 06/01/18 05:06 AM

I need to kit it & the O'reillys guy looked on the computer & in his big book & could not find it. It is an OE Mopar Rochester 2bbl with these #'s 7038417 1389(3)488 4Z02 The (3) might be an 8. Thank you for your time. EDIT it just hit me that he would have ran the # on there & I will give him the other # tomorrow.

Stamped in numbers are the only ones that will help identify the carb. Raised up numbers, those that are actually casting numbers, won't help on a Rochester.

these #'s are stamped. I will recheck if the one # in question is a (3) or an (8)

According to the video earlier years had tags under the screw which may be missing.

Since at least 1969, Rochester two barrels had the numbers stamped into a flat side of the float bowl. Earlier they had aluminum tags. I looked at my library edition Rochester Carb book and it is a 1971 edition so no help there. I recall in the 80's 360's having Q-jets, so maybe they also sourced 2 barrels from GM, but that 7038417 number would normally indicate a 70's carb.

No kidding? I only remember 500cfm Holley 2-barrels & themoquad 4-barrels, but I'm no small block expert.

It's all here in this link:

http://www.carburetion.com/quadnumber.htm

703 is from the '60s with A.I.R.

8 is 1968

5 means California emissions 2-barrel

1 means Chevrolet

9 odd number means it came in front of a manual transmission.

So it could have come off a 1968 Chevelle with a 307 that was sold in California, 3 on the tree.

Mopars were Carter and Stromberg and Holley if they had to, and much later, Rochester. I cannot remember any Rochester carbs on Mopars until the '70s or 80s.

In my 1971 Rochester bible there is a non GM section. Listed there are various Checkers, White Trucks, 1971 Cobra Jet 429, Studebakers and 1971 Plymouth.

Carb # 7041180 is listed as 71 Plymouth Valiant, Barracuda and Fury with a 318 2 barrel.

All I know is what the book shows, but an internet search also shows Q-jets on 85 and 86 360's.

But that still doesn't answer Roberts original question. Wish I had more.....

IIRC FWIW in 1971 Ma Mopar used Rochester's due to a supplier shortage. I want to say there is a TSB Technical Service Bulletin on this. I'm at work so I can't research it at the moment.

Good comprehensive info guys! I went back to O'reillys & he picked a kit that he said matched, the chebby one & it was the wrong kit but he said I could bring it back if that was the case likely since I have been in there several times on this issue plus they want me to switch my acct to them & get away from another parts house that I ain't happy with sooo I am going to take the old air horn to base gasket in & see if it matches the one in the pic he showed me today on the other chebby kit on the screen which is what I should have done first. I did confirm the carb #'s & it has a throttle lever with the horizontle Mopar arm which to my untrained eye sure looks OE Mopar. EDIT the stamped # is 7038417 and 13898488 stamped underneath it then stamped 4Z02

The 13898488 number googles to a Rochester boat (marine) carburetor. Lots of pictures too.

Re: Rochester 2bbl how to find the year/model - 06/03/18 05:18 PM

I made a mistake on the numbers: the 13898488 was in a mini clocking circle on the flat surface under the top air horn. 7038417 is stamped on the main body side with 4Z02 stamped right under it. it has a 1&11/16 bore. here is a pic of the critical gaskets that I would need to match in a kit. the throttle bracket sure looks OE Mopar.

Re: Rochester 2bbl how to find the year/model - 06/04/18 01:32 AM

By accident I stumbled across the alum tag for it: Mercruzer MCM 200/898 then underneath that is 1389-8488 so I thought well that takes care of the kit I need BUT it had NO jets & neither Rochester or Holley jets will screw in. [ Moparts Family Site - Keep it Friendly ]. Any thoughts?

Time to seek out another carb.

Anytime you find a carb with black finish,it is usually a marine application.

Re: Rochester 2bbl how to find the year/model - 06/04/18 05:33 PM

Yes it is black & I called the Mercury boat shop & the guy is gonna run my numbers down & see if he can get some jet sizes for me. EDIT & I had called Mikes Carburetor Shop & the lady that answered the phone said it looks like a rochester 2 jet but it ain't (I coulda swore I saw Rochester on it yesterday) & she confirmed that it takes different jets. If the boat shop cannot help I might try to tap em for holley jets & in the meantime start looking for another Rochester carb.
