Hey guys, I trust your guidance. I need a new set of heads for my stock 1965 383,automatic, 4 barrel, single stock exhaust, log manifolds, Mopar performance "road runner cam", Electronic dizy. My current stock Closed chambered 516 heads have a burnt valve in them. As much as it cost for machine work and new valve train parts I might as well buy new aluminum heads. What would you suggest I buy that will be bolt on using my shaft rockers and copper head gasket. The lower end is stock 70k block that doesnt burn oil but is getting tired. I am not ready for a complete rebuild but one in the future. I see Edelbrock has a bunch listed but I am limited in my knowledge of which ones would be good for my application. Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't take any head out of the box and bolt it on without having a machine shop go through it first, even Edlebrock. So, it I was to buy aluminum heads, I'd get the 440 Source Stealth heads, cause the look stock.

I like my Eddies and they just dropped the price, but if you're keeping manifolds then you really need something with a straight plug.

With your single exhaust and 4 bbl carb on an otherwise stock motor,
I would not be bolting new heads on. maybe get a dual exhaust and some other wear parts for that money.
Fresh heads and old rings will just compound the next weakest link.
Soon you will be blowing oil out the tail pipe.

I just did the same on my 68 383.
However, I will be using HP manifolds and dual exhaust,
a carter 4 bbl I refreshed myself, and a new electronic distributor...
I have been collecting these parts for awhile.
I had one brunt exhaust valve and simply replaced that one valve.
I have not done any machine work as the motor ran and like you I am not ready for a rebuild just yet.
I did clean the piston tops and combustion chambers in the heads, with a wire brush then added a new cam, timing chain, oil pump, and gaskets.
The new stuff I got will most likely cost a lot less than the new heads and I still can use them when I get the long block rebuilt.

Obviously I'm not going to get tens of thousands of miles, but I will be enjoying it this summer and hopefully a couple more.

I put a set of 440source stealth heads on a stock smogger 440. It ran well. That was about 10 years ago before there were all kinds of other budget options for aftermarket heads.

Good choices for stock replacement would be Edelbrock or 440 source heads. If replacing 915's, the smaller volume closed chamber versions. With a 70k bottom end in good shape, you can get a nice engine I believe. You will need a new head gasket... with a 5 bolt/cylinder BB head a variety of gaskets can work including a common Felpro blue PT. The high end choice would be MLS gasket.

As far as "out of the box" heads, many have used them. I think it is safer to have a good machine shop check out valve to guide clearance and valve seats at least.

Promaxx makes a god big block head also... 1075 pair assembled/shipped from jegs or summit.

You may be able to find a 10% off code for summit also.

Whatever you do you need a 78 cc combustion chamber with iron heads,less with aluminum, or it will be a real dog. A set of 440 source heads milled about .040, and a thin head gasket might work, or buy the aerohead 516s already done. Make your life easy and fix your heads. A 452 would drop compression a bunch, milling them and an intake to fit not worth it in my opinion, plus the pushrods are to long after milling, more money.

Also make sure you use steel shim head gasket if you use 516s, don't lose compression.

Thanks for the led on Aerohead, I will be ordering the 516's...Much much cheaper than loving my old ones up...
