motorhome 727 - 04/23/18 05:57 AM

i have a 727 out of a 77 or so motor home,it had a 440 in front of it and a Dana 70 behind it,it has a HUGE bolt on yoke on the back of the trans and is a short output shaft,so.....is the shaft diameter and spline count the same as a regular 727 ,or is this dude a creature all of its own?,no plans to use, just wanting info in case

There are two versions of the motor home 727, Class A chassis that have the emergency brake on the tail shafts and the class B and c that don't have it there. It sounds like you have one out of a one ton class B or C van chassis shruggy
To answer your question on both versions they are for motor home applications only shruggy
I am going to use one of those cores to take parts out them to convert the front of a pre 1967 car tranny to the later front pump and input shafts so I can use the 1967 and later torque converters, the front half share parts with the rest of the 727 of the same years up Not so on the back half shruggy

I had the same BB short shaft with a 3 5/8 u-joint.

FYI..truck pullers want that yoke to go bigger drive shafts

727 output spline is the same for a small 6270 joint.

I removed mine and slide a small yoke on from a SB 727 short shaft trans from a MH.

that trans will also have the HD 4 gear planetary and HD servos.

I have bolted a SB shorty in a 68 dart and the bolt on yoke clears the cross member and only needs a slip yoke change. I will wager the BB will fit a car also with a shaft change.

OH! 1 thing to watch on the short tail housing is the trans mount. kind of a long and short--short shaft tail housing.

you can tell by the speedo pinion location. one has it behind the mount one has in front of the mount.

the bigger MH chassis has the mount moved further back and uses a wider bolt pattern trans mount/flat rubber/2 bolts like what is found in a 65-70 trucks.

I made a cross member to use this trans in my 1/2 ton 440 truck.

If you are thinking of getting a Gear Vendors OD, that trans will give you the shorty 727 version. It will shorten the overall length by the difference between it and a regular 727.

It will likely have the HD internals but my understanding on the 4 pin planetaries is they aren't any stronger because the aluminum spline fails long before the pinions do.

One of the 727 gurus here can speak to whether the drums can hold more clutches than a regular 727.

The tranny can be used in our cars if the output shaft and tail housing are changed. I use that tranny in my builds because it is usually cheap and if Mopar thought that the internal changes were tougher then who am I to argue.

The output shaft from any 727 BB or SB will go into the pinion set, but there are 2 different spline pitches to watch for and mis-matching them will shorten their life expectancy.

'75 and back use a 45* pitch while '76 and up uses a 37.5* pitch. The later shaft has an extra groove in it to identify it.

Actually there are three different spline angles, it was changed again in '94 to 30°.
