Did All 70 B Body 4 Speeds Have 2 Shifter Mounting Location? - 04/20/18 10:09 AM

Just checked my 4 speed out of my 70 Road Runner. It does not have the 2 shifter mounting locations. Were some 70's just a single mount type? Numbers match my VIN on it.

I have a hemi four speed that came out of a low mileage 69 RT many years ago. It has TWO crossmember mount locations, one for the 69 and one for the 70. It only has one shifter mount location at the front. I bet yours is the same way. I was told it was it was a transion part to finish out the old style and getting ready for the new. I bet that is what you have. Look and see if you have two mounting pads.

A friend has a late 69 build RR that have a trans that has the 2 trans mount pads, only the 69 location is drilled, and it only has the forward shifter location cast on it .

I'm going to ask the OP the stupid question ... is this the original trans to the car ?

He said his numbers match.

Another possibility is that someone changed the tail shaft in the past.

Thanks for the input, I bought the car from the original owner in 1987, I do not know if he ever had the transmission out or worked on it. Yes, the vin matches the car so its the original transmission. I will put a couple of pictures up.

The tail HOUSING may have been changed. The tail shaft is inside the tail housing.

Learn something new here almost daily. up
I was told years ago that the '70-up dual shifter locations was because they used one spot for B-bodies and the other for E-bodies. blush
Glad I never had occasion to argue that point (especially with my wife). wink

That's true, they did use one spot for E bodies and one for B bodies

They did and it was for both body platforms , but also in a cost cutting operation they moved the crossmember mounting point to the same location as the 727, and 904, so they only needed to build one transmission crossmember.

What Chrysler did at one point late in the 69 model year is start recasting the tailhousing for the upcoming production change and cast a tailhousing with both crossmember mounting locations , but only drilled and tapped the 69 location, but oddly the tailhousing only had the forward shifter mounting point and not the E body rear location.

Got it now. 2 shifter mounting points and 2 trans. mount points.
Like I said, learn something new almost every day here (even someone as slow as I am sometimes wink ). boogie

OK, well my numbers matching 70 b-body A-833 (Jan 1970 build in St.Louis) has the traditional one set of cross-member mounting holes & two sets of shifter mounting holes.

That is just like this one, it has the 2 crossmember spots but just has the forward shifter mount. I don't have the fender tag, not sure when it was built.
THANKS!

The different crossmember was for automatic VS 4 speed in B bodies. 1969 and older.
The 727 and 904 use the same crossmember in B bodies.
