Need help 4 speed reverse lamp switch

Need help 4 speed reverse lamp switch - 04/09/18 04:11 PM

Working on a 74 Challenger that had been converted from Auto to 4 speed.

Looking for a two prong reverse lamp switch that goes into the trans.
The one in the trans has power going in but no power coming out.
All the wiring has been converted correctly including the reverse light mounted in the dash and the clutch starter switch.

I had no luck sourcing a new reverse light switch.
Can anybody at least have a part number I can interchange ??
Thanks in advance.

They are available through most part stores or Rock Auto, but they are all Chinese made ones that turn out to be pretty lousy. The factory original in my 4 speed crapped out. The switch was stuck in the close position so the reverse lamps were on all the time. The first replacement one I bought leaked shortly after it was install so I had to return it for another.

The pictures show the factory one on the left and on the right is a crappy one that is sold today.

I forgot to tell you, but for some reason when looking on Rock Auto's web site. You have to search a 1970 model or later. The two prong switch used in the manual transmission does not show up on any of the pre 70 listings.

Maybe 74 is different but if I remember correctly that switch just completed ground in the 70 models. Did you check for continuity between the 2 posts while in reverse with no wires connected?

The switch is hot one side and powers the lights on the other.Only reason for a ground circuit was for N start as far as I know.rocky

As dan9 mentioned, check across the 2 terminals of the switch, in reverse, it should be a dead short. Mine was intermittent at times, new switch, worked like a charm.

Make sure its gettin cotacted inside.IIRC there were some gaskets that were thick and would not let the ball detent all the way in.Simple to check remove press ball in and see if it is a closed circuit.Rocky
