New (to me) problem with my 69 Hemi bird - 04/08/18 12:47 PM

I have been involved for many years in restoring my old Plymouth and I ran into a new problem: the lower radiator hose keeps leaking at the block end. It's a very small leak and it might take a few days to develop as a small trace along the hose and dripping at the radiator end. I used a repro Corbin clamp an probably will buy a new one, but it is very tight when installed. I'm thinking of putting a thin bead of silicone on the pipe before reinstalling the hose, I have no other suggestions, so maybe some of you can chime in with better ideas? Thank you guys!

I have used Weatherstrip Adhesive with good luck. We always called it "Yellow Death". and now it also comes in black. Don't need much. Appropriate if you think about it. Sealing rubber to metal.

Ran into the same problem on a 383 car I'm working on. I found a casting line on the bottom of the pump housing I had to grind off. Even a screw clamp wouldn't seal it

Had athe same problem on a 383 and chased it for weeks, turned out to be the thermostat housing was weeping, running down the back side of the pump housing an onto the hose. When ever I looked it always appeared to be the hose connection. With clean antifreeze against the orange paint of the engine it was very hard to see it weeping out and down.

Other possible causes are: if using a newer radiator hose, they are thinner in wall diameter, the Corbin clamps offered by the repro market are spot on, this unfortunately leaves the clamp with less clamping power, and trying to reduce the diameter of the Corbin clamp by squeezing it smaller before install, results in "egging" it, causing it to still leak, maybe worse? If I'm using new radiator hoses I buy new Corbin clamps from McMaster Carr as they offer a wider array of sizes and they look factory original.

Another cause for leaks is if the hose had a wormgear/band clamp on it prior and you replaced it with a Corbin, it will leak, only fix is a new hose

Permatex High Tack gasket sealant works.

Permatex "aviation" form-a-gasket. Nothing better for sealing coolant hoses.
