1-3/4" Heddman vs. Angled Plug Clearance

1-3/4" Heddman vs. Angled Plug Clearance - 03/13/18 09:05 PM

I am planning to swap motors & the new heads are Edelbrock E-streets with angled plugs (440 in 70 b-body). Each two pairs of cylinders angle in towards each other slightly.

I would like to keep the same headers I have now (I "think" they're Heddman 1-3/4"...bought them long ago). I currently have iron heads (straight plugs) & cylinder #6's plug wire is already in there tight. As you can see, the #6 plug/wire is just left of the primary tube for cylinder #6 & the primary tube for cylinder #2 goes up/over/to the left of it. I'm afraid that if the plug is angled more towards the left (& that #2 primary tube on the left) I will have a spark plug/wire clearance issue.

Has anyone dealt with this & what is the solution? I think years ago Accel had some "shorty" yellow spark plugs that might help a little, but I don't want to get the motor in before I figure this out. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

Why not test fit the headers to the engine while it's still on the stand?

These headers are installed in the car on an iron head motor right now or I would. I don't want to pull the motor until the new one is ready to install since it's licensed/insured/fully drivable now.

If you have to ding a tube for clearance Hotrod has done a dyno test that shows little to no power loss from the ding even if its fairly large.

This, just get the blue tipped wrench and make a couple of dings. On my Headman Elites only 1 tube needed it for the RPM heads, the #2 tube, near the #6 plug. HTH, Steve

Thanks guys. That is certainly cheaper than my other idea of cutting the #2 tube, extending it 3", bending the bottom half of the #2 tube back slightly & welding in a patch piece. Is that even possibly for your basic muffler shop guy on headers?

Never understood why they made them angled.I almost bought a set but with my domed pistons no way was I having them fly cut to clear.Rocky
