staggered fan question

staggered fan question - 03/12/18 03:46 PM

when using duel "staggered" electric fans, does it matter which fan is the high speed unit [inlet or outlet position], or doesn't it matter ? this is for an ac retrofit with aluminum crossflow radiator. thanks in advance as always ! bow

I would think the one closest to the top inlet would be best. But just a personal guess. I seem to recollect the OEM Mopar fans are that way.

IMO, that's a tough call. Inlet will be hottest, but you'll probably use the low speed fan more. To make sure you don't overheat when the A/C is on, put the high speed by the inlet as long as the low speed by the outlet is enough for driving in traffic when you don't have the A/C on.....tough call, so I see why you asked.

ev2, most OEM fans have a high speed function when the ac is on, so i desire to keep this on this project. looking at two fan, factory setups, it seems the high speed fan is at the inlet side of the radiator. if i could fit a single fan in the radiator center, i would. however, with the cooling setup [radiator/condenser] pushed as far forward as the grille allows, i don't have enough room for the fan motor to front pulley relationship with the engine in the stock location to utilize a single fan. i don't like aftermarket fans for a multitude of reasons. so i'm now down to finding a pair of single fan/shroud combos that will work with what room i have to work with.

beeper, i may have to go with two high speed fans. i also thought about a big blade mechanical clutch fan/shroud combo, but i am not sure i can source a smaller water pump pulley with the right offset to allow belt alignment. wiring has been updated, and this is not an unlimited budget deal. the radiator being used is twice the size of the original, so it should be more than adequate for this application, as the original cooled very well with no shroud and a four blade fan.
