Radiator/Fan Combo

Radiator/Fan Combo - 03/10/18 10:58 PM

Due to space constraints I'm limited to 22" radiator size to cool my 360LA. I'm looking at the Champion MC-2374 3-row with fans but am skeptical that the two 10" fans (combined 2100 CFM) will do the job.

Anybody running this combo with a small block and A/C? How's it working for you?

I had those fans running on a big block car, they didn't move enough air for my car. I have a/c and an automatic trans, I overheated in my driveway coming home from work one day. I moved up to spal fans, but I haven't run the car in hot weather yet. I can say the spal fans move considerably more air than the champion fans did. Had I known before I would have gotten the shroud and sourced my own fans.

That rig sure looks like it blocks a lot of air flow.

Rule of thumb you need 5000 CFM fan capacity. Not enough. Also agree it would block air flow at speed.

The stock style fan/shroud works pretty darn well. That is what I would suggest. Over drive the fan at least a little and I bet it works fine.

Also one thing to consider is,that I think you will need a 100 amp alt to run them. And the added voltage can fry the wiring at the bluk head connection. Our cars came with 37 amp alts and that's what the wiring is designed for. I could be wrong on this but that's my understanding.

I would do Nachos' bulkhead parallel bypass & relay the fans right to the alt.

Not as pretty but many say the Chev HHR fan can't be beat.

Everything I have read about Champions fans is not good. Their radiators seem OK but the fans just don't seem to do the job. Also as previously mentioned a lot of the core is being blocked and I would suggest louver's or rubber flapper doors twocents

Re: Radiator/Fan Combo - 03/11/18 09:11 PM

Most of the aftermarket fans sold are pure garbage.

You'd be a lot better off with a fan like the HHR / 3.8 Taurus / 4-cyl contour single fan on a 22"

If you had a 26", the V6 Contour fan is basically the greatest thing since sliced bread. I don't even need the high speed the fans have.

I'm also running a contour fan, EFI, Aeromotive 340lph fuel pump, and everything else on the car on a 78a 12SI Delco alternator.

This is a setup ive used on a 1/2 filled small block with 4:88 gears on the street.

Dual HD spal fans with a dual pass cross flow rad and cover that also lets air move.

Ive one fan hooked to a T stat in the intake and the second fan on a toggle.

Ive never had to use the second fan unless I want a rapid cool off before I shut it down.

I got the paperwork on the specs if youd like them.

"Space constraints" is the key phrase. All of the suggested fans are too thick to fit my installation.

Looking for actual user inputs.

Sorry I do know those cheap ones arnt worth jack, ve replaced many for others.

Some have mounted things on the front of the core support vs the normal location.

Re: Radiator/Fan Combo - 03/14/18 01:51 AM

OK... stock style fan won't fit, dual Spal won't fit, Contour/Taurus fan won't fit, HHR fan won't fit. These options all seem to work fine but fit is the issue.

What is the space limitation? A pic would help. Maybe generate some ideas.

Yeah, I agree with ahy. Can you post a picture and/or tell us what your space constraints are? Two big turbos sticking out the front?

Battery on one side, fuel command on the other, 24" between them; WP hub 3 1/5" from radiator core. Engine mounted low so center of WP is way below core center.

Hi John wave

Here is the fan I use. Mine is set up as a pusher but you have enough room to set it up as a puller. This unit is a little under 2.75in thick. This is a dual speed fan but I have mine set up to run full tilt whenever the thermostatic switch powers it up. I have a Derale adjustable switch with 30amp relay set to 170* and it will hold that temp all day long...even in 100*F ambient air temps.

Once, a few years back, I was in the staging lanes and forgot to hit the toggle switch that powers the relay and noticed water temp at 220* shock Then I realized the relay hadn't been powered up. Within 60 seconds the temp was back down to 170* thumbs This is a big 572ci Stroker (700+ HP) so it builds some serious heat.

I recommended the same fan to a buddy who runs a Roots blower on his 500in street build. He was having trouble with overheating in the hot Tenessee summer weather. On my recommendation he tried the Rainbow 17" fan setup and it solved all his problems. He was totally impressed.

These are 2 of my experiences and there are others ; 2 other buddies are running them on Pro-Charger BB builds with the same excellent results. Both cars are street/strip B-Bodies that run well into the 9's apimp

Hope this helps...

How did you wire it? RockAuto pic looks like it has two connections (I assume 1 for each fan) and I didn't see a ground connection. It looks like there might be some logic, given the size of the cooling provisions in and the size of the box.

Did you just use a single relay with a temp sensor and run both fans together?

My application is an E body with 26" radiator.

Re: Radiator/Fan Combo - 03/16/18 10:25 AM

I'll suggest a flex fan (mechanical) and custom shroud. Flex fans are not my favorite but can work if chosen well. I have a friend that runs one in a handling application and works OK. The flex fan should fit fine and custom shroud to direct the air. Lightweight also.

Mancini/Muscle Car Radiators can make the aluminum shroud. You fill out a diagram with measurements and they send the shroud.

I had a custom one made for my 70' Challenger. Even added -20 An Fittings for the upper & lower hoses. It is supporting almost 1000 H.P. om motor on the street.

I used a Dakota Digital controller. The speeds are controlled by the resistor/diode pack in the lower driver's corner. The two connections on the motor are power and ground. If you don't use the resistor, you get the high speed. Wiring diagram (maybe not real pretty but accurate). My car has an autometer electric gauge so it uses that as a temp sender.

Both fans will start and run at the same time. But the low speed on its own works well.
