While we're talking rear ends....How about Lube??

Ok all - I got a good education on what to use to seal 'er up for every scenario....Now she's sealed and will NOT leak (I hope)
What is the best gear lube to run in the pumpkin?
It's a standard width A-body 8 3/4 with a 4:30 - 1 Richmond gear and Richmond Spool turning Dutchman Axles.
It will see track/street time maybe 70/30?
Again, it's been almost 30 years since I've put one back together, and my Dad used to use regular rear end lube, and would always bring me the magic bottle of Direct Connection "Whale Oil" additive that smelled horrible!!!
I'm sure technology has advanced since then!

Some guys say 80/90 conventional, some 80/140, some say synthetic; let's see how the votes come in.

If you have some of the old Moby_Dick oil that is sealed, the stuff is hard to beat.

With a spool no special additive is needed... whale oil or otherwise. For your intended use just about any gear lube - like 80W90 - should work OK.

Sustained high speed running and/or high temps would favor higher viscosity synthetic to take the heat but not an issue on the drag strip. xxW-140.

The last .01 second ET in the quarter mile might favor favor a lighter synthetic like 75W90.

Personally I would probably put 80W-90 in it.

Well, since I posted the other thread about the gaske/sealer for pumpkin to housing, I thought I'd stay on the rear end topic.....didn't mean to make everyone think.....well, we all have a one track mind.

So is synthetic needed??
I know I have whale oil, but it been opened. Probably 20 years ago???

Twenty-five years ago I was having a hard time getting the 4.88 pro gears to go past 200 rounds. One of my customers was the Kendal dealer for the aria and he suggested that I use synthetic. The ring and pinion get changed at 450 to 500 pass's now just for PM.

I used Valvoline or Pennzoil 85-90 Wt. petroleum based non synthetic gear oil, CRS now , in my old pump gas Duster with a strange 35 spline spool in both the 8 3/4 and the Dana 60 after I bent the stock type 8 3/4 housing up bad enough to pull the welds off of the ladder bar brackets on the passenger side during a run, luckily that happened on the starting line and not later
That car ran mid to low tens through the exhaust on Oregon 91 octane pump swill weighing 3450 lbs. with me in it, no problems on the gear lube ever

You don't need any additive with a spool. Use synthetic oil.

My bracket car came with the Redline lightweight shock proof gear oil in it, it had a blown B1 motor on methanol in the car with 5:87 pro gears that had gone 7.84 at above 186 MPH Those gears look excellent so I bough several gallons of it to use with the used pickup Dana Corp 4:56 street gears I put in it No noise or problems so far with my little 700 HP bracket motor
Redline sells several different versions, weights, of their Shock Proof gear oil, good stuff

I've worked on and own a car with a fabbed rear end with the big filler cap on them. If you look down that filler hole with a flashlight you can't believe how that stuff sticks to everything! It's amazing! BTW it smells as bad as the regular stuff...

I should have read better, didn’t realize you were running a spool. Save the Whales for now and use it on a stock suregrip setup

The Sperm whale oil additive is for the clutch type posi, it slicks the plates and steels up so they don't grab and tear up the clutches

If you are running that gear on the street you need a GOOD synthetic gear lube. If you live in a warm clime year round, you can use a 70w140. If it gets cold use a 70w90...preferably a GL-6 gear lube.

Please explain how a 70w140 would be appropriate for a warm climate and a 70w90 for a cold.

OP, I put Red Line synthetic gear oil in my last street Dana with a chrome cover and that rascal leaks out between bottom of the gasket and housing, even with Mopar gear lube silicone
That cover never leaked with regular gear oil in all the other rear ends I have used them on
I'll probably end up putting regular petroleum based posi gear 75x90 WT oil back in it with the posi lube additive
