2007 Dodge Caliber fuel gauge issues - 02/13/18 04:41 PM

Moparts,

My gas gauge died this past weekend and all other gauges appear to work correctly. Along with the gas gauge the light comes on that the vehicle is out of fuel as well.

Google did not provide much insight so I am hoping a tech with some experience might be able to point me in the right direction!

Thanks everyone!

most likely have to pull and replace the fuel "module" in the tank, some models you can get a repair from mopar, some models you just get to replace the whole thing pump and all$$$$$$

Despite the alternator being an absolute hell raiser experience to pull, the fuel pump takes just a couple minutes. There is an access hole under the back seat and seat comes out by removing two torx bolts.

The pump died on my Caliber right before I traded it in. The thought of lighting that piece of [censored] on fire and pushing it off a cliff came to mind, but the trade offer was too good.

So the fuel pump swap should fix the issue? You are right that is an easy fix. I agree this is not the finest piece of engineer that mopar ever put out. I have replaced the alternator 4 times already. Thank you Autozone for a lifetime warranty.

Well I swapped out the sending unit and fuel pump and it did not fix the issue. gas gauge still dead. Any idea what power wire might power the gas gauge? All other gauges work.

The driving lights and gas gauge all seemed to quit at once. I assumed they were two separate issues but I guess not.

Insight appreciated.

The gas gauge most likely is worked by the cluster. And the cluster should get a message over the BUSS to tell the cluster where to set the gas gauge. I don't remember off the top of my head if the body controller or PCM or the cluster itself moniters the sending unit. But all the newer Mopars since around 2000 or so work that way where the cluster just gets a message over the cars BUSS (communication system) from the controller that moniters the fuel tank sending unit and then the cluster positions the gas gauge where it needs to be. Any dealer should be able to work the gas gauge with the scanner to see if the gauge itself is bad and the dealer should also be able to read the controller to see what the sending unit is reading. The dealer can actually command the cluster to work the gas gauge with the scanner and read what the sending unit reads. I retired in 2011 so I have been away from the cars for a bit but you should either have a dealer or find a shop that has the scanner setup to check the gas gauge system. That much better then guessing and throwing parts at it. Ron
