What does a tone ring do, and what happens if its gone? - 03/03/09 05:38 PM

Ok this may be an odd question, but I need to know what the tone ring does. I was told at one time that it had something to do with the ABS on the rear, but now have found it may have something to do with my speedo?

I am looking at replacing the axles in my 93 RC with 3/4 ton donors from a 77. Will the lack of the tone ring be an issue? Right now the rear ABS is not working and that im not concerned about. However I would like to have a speedo, and wonder if the lack of a speed sensor would cause any issues with a FI engine?

As you may notice Im new to the FI computer stuff, I normally play with the 70's stuff.

Can a tone ring be added to the 77 Dana 60?

Is your speedo currently working ? if it is pull the wire off the rear sensor and see what happens , that prepare you .

hang the phone up and check again

sorry i couldnt resist

i am not positive but its probably the ring that the abs sensor reads to tell if the brakes are locked up. if its not working anyway, is should be no problem

no tone ring on the rear diff means no speedo OR RWAL ( abs ) operation

will no speedo be an issue for the operation of the engine/transmission on a 93?

I currently have speedo, but no cruise, and my ABS light is always on.

Although I am not 100% certain I would suspect the tone ring is ABS-only and that the transmission or transfer case still has a speed sensor. I know the 96 Dakota we are dismantling has a speed sensor in the same place a speedometer cable would normally go in a vehicle with a mechanical speedometer.

93 will have a hall effect sensor in the rear of the trans for the speedo..Rear axle sensor is for ABS ONLY and has absolutely nothing to do with anything else.

Speedo operation from the ABS/rear axle sensor did not come around until 1998
