preserving a truck body and frame questions - 02/05/18 07:28 PM

I restored my 86 D250 truck 7 years ago using chassis saver on the frame, and duplicote roll on truck bed liner under the bed, inside the bed sides, inside the doors and fenders. In seven years I'm back to a rotted out mess all over again.
What other coatings will prevent this from happening again? Disassemble, repair rust, and get everything rhino-lined?

Drain holes need to be open as always.

House wont stand if the foundation wasnt solid. What was underneath the bedliner coating ? Moisture still got in there and attacked it anyways.

This stuff is about as good as it gets for keeping things from rusting.

and a GOOD spray setup that actually works.

For the doors, I took off the door panels, sprayed a rust killer in there after cleaning off any surface rust and debris, let it dry ,then I sprayed inside the doors with a bed spray.
For the bed, I drill three holes on the inside of the bed sides ,sprayed inside those holes between the inside and outside walls with a rust killer primarily around the wheel wells used a Eastwood frame spray with the hose, I did the same thing with the rocker panels from the backside of The Rocker drilled holes and use rust killer and frame spray in there as well.

All of my "non show" stuff I intend to spray down with Fluid Film everywhere I can. If a dry style product is necessary, I cant say any work long term , especially exposed to poor weather or a lot of UV.

I think what is best depends on location. The starting point always needs to be solid steel.

For the frame, best is full sand blast, epoxy primer and paint. I did not do that on my truck... next best is clean thoroughly, rust stop primer and paint. For this to work, first de-grease thoroughly. Solvent on rough spots, strong detergent, pressure wash, repeat. Then get off loose rust and paint. I used a needle peen gun and picks in tight places. Then prime. I like either red Rustoleum or Eastwood rust encapsulator. Then paint with satin black Rustoleum.

For door cavities and other hidden spaces, clean as above, prime and apply waxy rustproof. I like the Eastwood stuff.

For the bed inside, get the rust cleaned off, prime with epoxy and paint works well... or bedliner of your choice after primer. I spent better than a day with stout angle grinder and wire wheel cleaning my bed insides. Dust mask needed.

For the bed underside, treat similar to the frame... except no needle peen gun. Strip to steel, prime, paint.

And then after all that, if you plan to continue to drive it in the salt and muck, wash it weekly, and redo the rust treatment every year.

The stuff they are spreading on the roads in the midwest these days eats metal pretty quickly. If your not driving it in the winter, proper storage is a must. Improper storage is almost as bad as driving it. Gene

Sounds like you did not do a proper clean, strip, epoxy prime before applying your topcoat. Don't believe any of the gimmicky product hype out there, nothing replaces proper prep and product selection.

I would wash the area thoroughly, then clean with a degreaser. Then wire wheel, grind and sand blast as needed to get everything back down to bare metal. Then I would wash everything down with a phosphoric acid based rust converter prep wash, then rewash again with soap and water. Then epoxy prime everything (with a legit 2-part epoxy primer, no crap in a spray can), followed by topcoating with the topcoat of your choice. The underside I would do with undercoating, the heavier stuff you buy per gallon and apply with a schutz gun. Note, you have to apply the topcoat within the recoat window which for epoxy primer is generally 2-3 days depending on brand.

I get all my stuff oil sprayed for rust prevention but up here it's pretty common to find a place to do that and you can buy spray cans of Rust Check and Krown to do areas yourself also.

The problem with dry stuff like bed liner and Ziebart is while they block moisture and crap out they also trap stuff in against the metal.

On my 2004 Ram I spray aerocroil in the doors, hood, tailgate, and rockers in the dirt driveway and let it leak out, it stinks for a week, but have no visible rust anywhere yet, and i live in Michigan, and drive it every winter.

Since they like to shovel the salt out on the roads around here, I had this company treat my new truck.

Buy a vehicle you do not value and drive it during the winter. Buy this vehicle cheap in the fall and sell it in the spring for (hopefully) a profit. This is the best method to preserve a vehicle in the rust belt.

If you got 7 years out of your truck, that is not to bad. I've seen rusted trucks that were less than 10 years old around Chicago!!

Reasonably priced as well. $130 to $150 depending on the size of the vehicle. Looks like only one location is the US, in Saint Louis.

I used to swear by that stuff when we lived in North Dakota. Was pleasantly surprised when this one opened up in St. Louis. I get my daily drivers done now.

They are actually a local snow removal/plow company that started using Krown on their own salt fleet. They liked it so much they opened a franchise to do cars in the off-season. I think they now have a contract now with MODOT.

I've used the POR15 paint and that stuff is good. I foam brushed it on frame after proper prepping (I'm down south but still want protection). Toxic smell even with mask though.

Speaking of up high, how do you all stop the roof drip rail rust? I keep my truck dry, but occasionally it's going to get wet, or damp. Does the infamous rust along the roof line start inside and rust out or is it from water resting on the drip rail? Is it enough just to dry the exterior whenever it gets wet?

I bought their stuff, their prep products and followed their instructions. It peeled off after the first winter. Junk IMO.

I used just their black frame paint and really liked it. I don't know about the other products.

Roof rust starts inside- usually as a consequence of a leak from the drivers side foot vent or the top corners of the windshield. That moisture evaporates and gets trapped between the inner panel, forward roof support and outer roof panels.
