‘65 a body 833 vs. say, e body - 02/05/18 03:33 AM

My son just acquired a ‘65 a body with an A833 in it. The questions are this:
1. What are the physical and performance differences between it and perhaps an e body 833?
2. Can it be built to take significantly more power than the 273 is putting to it?

I’m sure we’re in for an education on this build. It’s going to be a challenge to get it to where he envisions it.

It's Abody length with Abody length tailshaft, shifter location, and mainshaft.

The 65 and earlier trans' have a ball and trunion output flange.

The trans itself is not really significantly weaker than other 23 spline trans. Will take and warmed 273 or 340 or 360....

The ball and trunion is what people don't like about them.

Read the ID guide on the Brewers website.

That tranny could be one of the early 3.09 first gear trannys work scope
You can mark and align the input shaft and mark the front bearing retainer and then mark the flange on the output shaft and output shaft cover and put it in first gear and rotate the input shaft exactly one full complete revolution while counting the flange revolutions, it will either rotate a little over 2.6 revolutions or a little over 3.1 revolutions scope
The reason I bring this up is the lower first gear ratio allows you to run a higher speed rear gear without bogging in first gear up

BTW, what does he want the car to become?

A light small block A body will be OK with the 23 spline box twocents

Like Cab said it probably has a 3.09 first gear so 3.23 or 3.55 rear gears would be a nice cruiser with some goo mechanical advantage down low. This ramps up the fun factor and the clutch disc will also thank you for it drive

Speedometer pinion hole in the tail shaft is smaller and unique to the early setup and pinion availability sux.

Is he going to stick with the 273 or put in a bigger SB?
The reason I'm asking is the RPM drop between each gear on the wide ratio trannys may not help that little motor on a road course work
You should convert the tail shaft and output shaft to the later type that you can use a conventional slip yoke and U joint on that end of the driveshaft up twocents
The E body tranny have a completely different longer tail shaft and out put shaft designed for the E body shifter mount scope
The 1970 AAR Cuda and T/A Challenger and all the 1971 and later OEM 833NP trans. had a closer ratio gear set in them which may be better for road racing scope

I suggest you go over to the cornering section and talk to them about using that A833 for road racing.

The straight line guys that predominate here won't know.
