What is the best aftermarket intake for a mild street 383?

Performer RPM is hard to beat from all the dyno numbers that I've seen. I ran one on a mild 383 and a 470 stroker; worked good on both.

A Holley street dominator is nice. Those aren’t very tall and dyno well. Ive used them on mild stockish 383s with success. Don’t let the single plane scare you.

This. Really good intake. The only one that made a little more power was the single plane M1 intake, which isn't made anymore.

Mild 383, DP4B or a regular Performer. Would not recommend a single plane.

Any dual plane alum intake that you could source locally for cheap (CL is worth a try). As said the Performer single plane is an exception.

I hated that intake on the street and I run 3:91 Gears Auto Trans

Zero Torque from 0 - 3500 Rpms

Was just a dog compared to the Performer I replaced it with

Now above 5,000 Rpms , another story

The DP4B is what replaced the Performer RPM on my car. Hopefully I'll have some track numbers in the Spring for everyone.

No love for the Torquer 383? Got one on my combo. Don't know how it would stack on a stock stroke motor though. Got mine off the board here for $120.

Totally agree. Love that intake. Have it on my stockish 67 coronet with a 383. All it has is the street dominator intake, a little cam and a 750 dp carb. At 4025 lbs runs 15.00.

+1. I did back to back testing with stock intake and the holley with 3.91 gears in a 4200lbs car. Gutless would describe it. 3rd intake was rpm perf and it's great. I kept the holley in the event I build a b block stroker tho.
Back in the day that 383 with a 750dp, headers and oem intake went 14.18 @ 98mph

The old Torker 383 is a decent intake that you can usually find used very cheap. I paid $75 for mine. Both the 383 and 440 Torkers pull strongly in the midrange. It is not a good choice if you are running a low stall torque converter. The Holley SD is a great intake but is also soft on the low end. Unless you are using a 3500 stall converter, one of the dual planes would be better. My vote for a mild (whatever that is)383, Performer RPM. http://www.hotrod.com/articles/hrdp-0712-mopar-intake-manifold-comparo/

Why no Performer RPM?

I used the 383 Torker on mine, 2" carb spacer and a 3310, still have it. Get that carb and timing right and it will work fine. DP4B or stock 68-69 if totally street and no gear.

Re: best intake for mild street 383? - 01/15/18 09:59 PM

Had the Weiand Action plus on my warmed over 383. It was OK, looked alot like the stock intake. Put a Weiand xcelerator on and it seemed to have a more upper RPM power, and slightly less low RPM power. Likely a decent setup if I was running a high stall converter, but with the stock converter, it was a bit slow off the line.
This was before the Edelbrock RPM was developed.
I would likely use the RPM intake now.

Re: best intake for mild street 383? - 01/15/18 11:10 PM

It's my understanding that a mild build with stock cast iron heads as the topic of this thread seems to indicate, the performance advantage of the Performer RPM intake may not be fully utilized until one moves up to aluminum heads.

That said, pick the intake that will allow you to run at least a 3" x 14" inch air filter without a drop base and still have adequate hood clearance. If you cannot achieve this, any incremental gain with a taller intake might be compromised with your limited air filter choices.

I'm using the DP4B on my 68 383 Dart , 4-speed and really like the low/mid range pull..Prior intake was the RPM performer and that performed well at high RPMs.. DP4B gave me better hood clearance along with better street light acceleration..

Why no Performer RPM?

Here is what this data suggests to me. The first small 4 bbl intake may have down 5 to 10hp over the others. All the rest are the same. The slight differences are mostly weather conditions, and maybe driver consistency and tune. For what it is, it is making nice power and is a well balanced package IMO.

Its a 280 to 300 hp deal and the cam and/or carb are the power limiting factors, not the intake. Same testing on a 350 or 375 hp deal and you'll see some performance separation between manifolds.

Re: best intake for mild street 383? - 01/17/18 10:07 PM

My first thought was....... How mild is "mild"?

That could be anywhere from 300-425hp and still be relatively mild.

For the lower end of that range I'd go with a std performer, the higher end..... The RPM.

That assumes the rest of the car is built to be compatible with the overall character of the motor.
