440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts

440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts - 01/12/18 05:58 AM

I have a '74 Dodge Charger with a '440 that had an Edelbrock intake, and I want to bring it back to a more stock set up.

I am installing a cast iron intake dated 8/28/67 and a '71 AVS that I had rebuilt. No problems there.

The issue is that the Edelbrock intake has a boss on the passenger side with a bolt hole that a factory bracket from the A/C compressor bolts into. The cast iron intake will not accept that bracket. I am thinking that style bracket is for later cars.

Would I need a '67-'71 set of B or E body A/C brackets for this application? I know it seems like a Frankenstein set up, but will be very stock looking and I will get to run my AVS rather than a Thermoquad.

All help appreciated!

You need to post some pictures. There are a multitude of brackets for these cars and we need to see what you have.

Re: 440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts - 01/12/18 06:04 PM

Something weird there. My 74 400 doesn’t have anything on pasanger side. The bracket attached to the intake runs to the “front” coil support provision.

IN fact i have never seen ANY special provision anywhere to any block allong the years. AC bracket setups used whatever EXISTANT PROVISION, like the car didn’t get AC.

Thanks for the input so far! I will post some pics of the previous Edelbrock and the bracket it used.

Since I am now running an AVS style intake, I am thinking that I will need a bracket from a '68-'70 440? Does that seem right?

The bracket setup changes due the year, not due the engine... I mean, maybe some lenght differences can be found between a 400 and 440 BUT if both are 73/74, the setup itself is the same and will look the same without measure it.

Shame I don't have clear pics of my engine bay where the Compressor bracket setup its shown clearly

Re: 440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts - 01/13/18 04:59 PM

ok FINALLY found pics... they were on my cell phone, that's why I never found it on my PC. This is for 73/74 BB. Even 400 and 440 can change lenghts due the diff block height, the bracketing setup should be remain the same. The only bracket running somehow to "passenger" side goes to front coil provision and is not "a pipe kind" like earliers

I'm using an Eddy performer intake, which is ALLMOST the same than a stock one, just a tad higher ( maybe half an inch ) so had to mill down a bit the coil bracket provision on intake to fit correctly the A/C bracket without bending. On a stock intake, this compressor bracket will be over the coil bracket, not underneath like I made to fit.

Also the front area close to valley pan front rail. Had to notch the intake to fit the rail bracket.

I hope it helps

and well, a bit off topic but since you are returning to stock look... here is a stock 73/74 intake modified for performance.... that could be a great item for you

Re: 440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts - 01/13/18 05:34 PM

or an untouched ones:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cast-iron-440-I...z70&vxp=mtr

I mean, for somehow correctness about the carb opening

never have advertised that molded area on cyl 1 runner on some and some not, which is threated and sealed with an hex cap on the modified intake from my earlier post

all 3 are diff there.

Re: 440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts - 01/13/18 05:50 PM

and, 440 eddy performer aluminium intake, same look than stock, maybe just like mine, half an inch higher, so more ventury effect than stock... just like me, trimm it, paint it and done. No EGR provision

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Edelbrock-Perfo...VuU&vxp=mtr

I got mine in $75 in perfect conditions... I bet can be found cheaper, but to get you the idea.

just diff on the manifold vacuum port side from the iron stock piece. 383/400 got it on correct side, but planes inverted

Re: 440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts - 01/13/18 06:02 PM

He wants to run an AVS, which is the square bore pattern, not the spreadbore the thermoquad or edelbrock intakes have.

Re: 440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts - 01/13/18 06:14 PM

he WANTS TO or he will run because is the one he got ? wink

the opening will not disturb running a squarebore carb on a spreadbore intake, like backwards... just need to consider the mounting provisions if needed... spacer/adaptors are available around in just around $10-15.

anyway, not telling what must be done, but suggesting, looking forward to the "stock look" on a more correct stock setup as he told, but for the year as I suggest. Opinions, ideas, just that

Re: 440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts - 01/13/18 06:45 PM

Why he's doing it is irrelevant, he is doing it and that is what he's asking. Stock 73/74 setups apparently will not work with his combo and he's asking what does. I don't have a setup like what he is using and googling around doesn't show a brace on the compressor on any of the images I could find, 68 Charger 383.

PS, stock choke won't work right with an AVS on a spreadbore intake with an adapter.

If I remember bright, bolted up 3 places, front intake bolt, coil bolt and bracket on the front vally pan strap, I'll look later on mine

Ok, once again the intake deal was as mentioned as an OFF TOPIC deal just posting opinions/suggestion looking forward for a correct stock look for the year ( since he pointed out was changing for more stock look ). Also compairing the intake itself since he pointed out the intake he was to use got a boss/provision for some A/C bracket ? hardly doubt that, since intakes never were issued being for A/C or not. Compressor bracketing was designed to be installed on existant provisions. Nothing more.

The bracketing for BB 73/74 is posted on the pics. They are from my own Charger 74 400, which MUST be the same for 440. Maybe lenght differences due the diff block height ? sure, but setup itself should be the same.

More pics are welcomed to be sure.

dunno on AVS, but TQs got a thick phenolic or cardboard spacer between intake and carb itself. If AVS/AFBs got a spacer like that, the adaptor can be in replacement fo that one shruggy. The adaptor is about the same thickness than the thick original spacer.

I'm having trouble posting a pic of my intake, but this one on EBay is identical to mine.

This is a link to the Edelbrock type that I have.

My A/C bracket bolts to the forward, passenger side hole which my earlier AVS cast iron unit does not have.

Sorry for my lack of posting skills, but hope this helps.

I have some spare brackets lying around, so maybe I can make something work like in the first photo in this thread.

Would a 5/16 bolt in a coil bolt hole be sufficient if I had a bracket that would fit? It looks like that was done here possibly?

Thanks for the link! This would definitely be a contender if I had not already spent a good bit rebuilding my AVS.

Re: 440 A/C Compressor Bracket Dilemma for the Big Block Experts - 01/16/18 05:45 AM

OK, I really need to be figure out out to post pics. After installing the '68 manifold on the motor, I tried again to test fit the compressor with the '74 brackets. I flipped the original '74 passenger side bracket 180 degrees and it lines up almost perfectly with the forward coil bracket bolt hole! Unbelievable! So, since the bracket set up is bolted up to the water pump and the driver side intake, is it OK to use the 5/16 bolt for the coil bracket to secure this bracket? I may be able to tap to 3/8 but not sure if it's necessary...

Same existant bolt than the coil bracket. No need for more
