Can you ID this aftermarket 727 torque conveter part number?

I pulled the stock 440 engine from my 1971 Fury. The transmission was rebuilt by the previous owner and the torque converter replaced.

The only markings on the torque converter are: 8554 1

Does anyone have any ideas? A Google search turned up nothing.

Is the marking stamped into the metal or written/stenciled?

The markings are stamped. Other than that and the two weights there is nothing else on the converter.

The stampings are pretty much useless for identifying the converter. Diameter and weights give a clue but that's all.

A "stock" '71 440 would have no weights on the converter face but could have thin weights on the periphery.

I forgot to mention that it is an all numbers matching 440 HP engine & trans. The torque converter is a 12", 24 spline, with I think narrow ring gear (not sure), with two square weights on the face (engine side) that measure 3/4" x 1-1/4" x 1/8".

I looked at the Transtar catalog with no match.

Does the torque convertor have a drain plug?

As I stated, a pre-'73 440 should have no external balance weights on the converter.

Either the forged crank has been replaced with a cast or the weighted converter was installed on a forged crank by mistake.

Wow! Okay...I'm pretty sure it does have a drain plug. I will have to go back to the shop and check.

It's my understanding that the crank is original in this E86 motor as are the Six Pack rods. The pistons are new TRW L2355F. The rebuild papers say the assembly was balanced.

The "heavy rod" motor is an exception but the weights you describe are way more than that motor needs (about twice as much).

Well, I have confirmed the rods, steel forged crankshaft and the thin or "skinny" balancer on the motor.

I just wish I knew what torque converter the tranny shop put in...
