Call these guys - they don't list it but they might do it

Another one to try is ECS

http://www.ecsautomotive.com/index.php

Also don't drill out the rivets - just snip the backside of the rivets with a pair of snips

You should be able to refinish yours unless you put a hole in it.

Telling us more about what's actually wrong with the VIN tag would help people tell you have to deal with/fix it.

Imho a damaged Vin is better than none or incorrect. Run it.

I think that most everyone would agree with that, including your states DMV/Licensing and inspection departments.

You got to love having an E Body !! What was Chrysler thinking attaching the vin to a replaceable vinyl dash pad rather then the metal dash frame. violin

Define better?

A damaged vin tag will net you a whole lot of bureaucratic hoops to jump thru, the same number of hoops as a lost VIN tag because the solution is still the same, a state issued VIN tag once the state decides you don't have a stolen vehicle.

I wonder if anyone noticed the OP has three posts, all in this thread.

Cops always look at the dash vin tag when they pull you over. Want to guess what the first cop that sees that damaged VIN is going to think?

In 40+ years of driving, I've only had 1 cop look at my VIN tag, and I've been pulled over more times than one can imagine...

The ONE time a cop looked at the VIN was because I was driving a freshly painted vehicle home that had no glass, trim, bumpers, grill, lights, etc, etc....funny part of the event, 2 State Troopers, the "smart" one says to the other Statey, "and he dosen't have an inspection sticker either", "NO SH!T, could it be because there's no windshield in the car!", the other responded...no tickets, just a warning after I had to explain the vehicles "condition"

The OP has yet to explain exactly what type of damage was done to the tag other than
Quote:

.

That still doesn't really tell anyone much about the damage.
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
He could put tape over the sequential numbers to hide that part of the VIN on the tag.

Without seeing the tag no one can really say if the tag can be smoothed out or somehow fixed.
If the VIN stamping isn't damaged it may be salvageable.

Personally I think he should quit being a cheap azz and just pay the price to get a quality reproduction tag.
It shouldn't be an issue getting one made as long as he has the original tag that you can clearly read the VIN on it.

I noticed his post count, but does that really make a difference to answering his question?

How many cars out there like E-body with the tag on the pad and not the metal frame?

Know of any other brand X cars like this?

Re: Dash board vin plate - 11/22/17 09:59 PM

notice his listed state - MI

in his state I believe his only legit option is a trip to the local DMV for advice

Re: Dash board vin plate - 11/23/17 03:37 AM

Contact the State is the best advice. But a damaged Vin tag still has the numbers that match the rest of the vehicle stamping. So why would he have to succumb to a state issue Vin?

Nanket, 81_93 Dodge truck, 80-86 or so Ford truck, International till the late 70-s, most Ford Dodge and ggm too. Swapped Vin tag isn't just a Mopar thing.

Re: Dash board vin plate - 11/23/17 05:19 AM

iagree Just shut up and do some searches on here and you will see all kinds of comments, anywhere from you will go to prison for the rest of your life to no one really caring...and you will find the information you need. I actually have a tool that embosses data tags just like a single line vin tag...but it was used for making serial numbers for machines. Tim

Sorry, wrong info. I own an 86 Ford truck, VIN is on the body. Not on the dash pad. The dash pad has a cut out so you can see the VIN through the windshield.

I can take a photo in the daylight so you will believe me.

Re: Dash board vin plate - 11/23/17 04:56 PM

Nanket, ok so I was wrong on the 80's Ford's. But in the 70's most trucks had tags held on the door jamb by regular rivets or even just screws.

Many Ford and Ih had the tag on the door itself, ever replace a rusty door?

60's Mustang had a tag that was often moved due to damaged spring towers iirc.

Re: Dash board vin plate - 11/23/17 06:04 PM

You cant afford to fix a vin tag and you bought an E body. You should just sell it (they are not cheap cars) after you fix the tag because nobody will want it with a damage tag.

Re: Dash board vin plate - 11/24/17 02:59 PM

I worked at a Chrysler dealer and a lady bought a new dash for her 95 Dodge pick up....guess where the vin plate is riveted too. I called the Mo State Highway patrol and talked with the main vehicle inspector. Explained the situation with the dash replacement and vin being attached to the plastic dash and what was the proper legal thing to do with the vin plate. I was told in no way shape or form was anybody allowed to reattach that plate back to the vehicle. There is a form to fill out explaining why the vin was removed, don't you dare drill the rivits, then the vehicle has to be inspected by the highway patrol. The original vin plate is confiscated and destroyed and a new state issued vin is applied by the officer. Then you have to re title the vehicle at the DMV. It's the most stupid thing I've ever heard but that is how Missouri does it. I don't know why an officer can't just reattach the original vin plate other than the state can jack you for a bunch of money. And for those that like to live dangerously...it's a felony to remove the vin and reattach it.

Re: Dash board vin plate - 11/24/17 04:00 PM

VIN issues have everyone involved walking on eggs because nobody wants to be the one who OK's a stolen car. I worked at a Ford dealership in the 1980's and we sold a new Thunderbird with an incorrect VIN plate. It was a project to correct the factory mistake. The Service Manager, Ford regional rep (who brought a new VIN tag), a glass man (to R&R the windshield), and several witnesses had to be there, plus pictures were taken and lots of forms were filled-out.
