are you using your factory mopar jack if you have flat

if you are on the road and get a flat tire are you using the factory jack in trunk are using a modern jack style,some say factory jacks was not to safe back in good old days or now.thoughts,complaints,ideas.thanks

I have a pile of mint condition jacks, spacesaver wheels/tires, hooks, spacers, wheel wrenches and frame-tiedowns out of all my E-bodies thrown in the scrap pile.

All that sh1t is good for is uglying up the trunk, taking up space and slowing the car down.

Cell phone and roadside assistance. If it's bad enough I'll get someone to bring out my car hauler and we'll do it ourselves.

Outside of not physically capable of changing a tire, I would NEVER call someone out to do my tire change. Other scenarios would be if the car wound up being on such an uneven surface that it would be too dangerous to raise up my vehicle.

I carry all tools that are required to change the tire for that certain vehicle as well as extra tools.

When buying a new(used) vehicle, how many people actually check for tire changing tools? As well as going around to check all 4 wheels to see if you can break the lugs? If you wait until you have a flat you might find yourself not being able to change a tire because of a lug being on too tight, frozen or stripped. Also there might be a lock lug on them and guess what? The previous owner forgot to include the lock lug tool with the purchase.

Yeah I hear you, call AAA and let them do it, but what if you had to wait 3 hours for them to arrive? It happens I know I used to work for them, changing tires roadside. Did it take me 3 hours to drive to them? Of course not but in the summer here in Vegas cars in the I-15 would drop like flies. Flat tires, overheating, dead batteries(at the exits) and lock outs. All piling up at the same time and put on a "wait" list. Very pissed off customers and our dispatching was ran poorly putting us in a "no win" situation with us being the face to the customers of AAA.

Oh and BTW I would use a new style jack instead of the OEM jack.

When I travel ( in an old car or newer makes no difference) . I have a small floor jack in a case that goes with me. And an electric Impact with the appropriate socket.

I wouldnt hesitate to use a bumper jack, no more dangerous than those POS scissor jacks that most stuff comes with (if it even comes with anything). The jack our 02 1500 has under the seat is a total joke, I really hope I never have to use it.

If I could avoid using the factory equip jack, I would. They were a bad joke back when, and they still are. I carried a small floor jack for years, then I stepped up to a real scissor jack with a 4 way tire iron. These days I'm with the AAA call group, the only car that even has a spare is the wife's PT and I wouldn't bet on how much air it has in it.

I have floor jacks, an air compressor and air tools at home, should a tire need anything. Gene

Who says and why? Dad used 'em on the '47 Plymouth and '71 Valiant. I used 'em on the '53, '56, '57 Plymouths and the '72 Valiant, as well as My '65 El Camino and '73 Pontiac and '69 Ford.

They work fine. My '59 Fiat 600 had similar idea: hooked at a point along the side of the body and lifted the whole side. Screw mechanism arrangement for the up an down.

My '08 Corolla has a screw jack. Now there's a piece of work. Instead of standing up, ya'get to kneel down, position a little bitty scissors jack that has a too short handle, and try to keep the handle in the slot while ya' grind away raising the vehicle. Yes, I had to use it for a flat.

Used to have an old Sears scissors jack that worked real good. Screwed up and left it in the '69 LTD when I rotated out of Panama. The Walmart/Harbor freight scissors jacks are are junk compared to the Sears, but I got one of them in the trunk on the Corolla now.

They can bend the bumpers.... look and you'll see it

I used one on my Charger until I had the bumpers rechromed and I didn`t want to mess them up.

The jack under the seat of my '04 dually is excellent!

AMEN to this, me too, especially on road trips, aluminum floor jack, electric impact...too easy

i like to find a used, still working aluminum race floor jack, a 3'4" piece of plywood that is a few inches larger than the jack foot print to give the jack extra support on soft surfaces, and to make sure there are no problems with electric batteries being dead, or low on charge, a 24 or 27" 1/2" drive hobo fright breaker bar with the appropriate size socket. these don't take up much space in the trunk, and will be guaranteed to be in working order if a tire needs to be changed. often times, you can pick up a piece of luggage that will be small enough to contain all the items needed CHEAP at the good will store. stores nice and also can be packed so you have NO rattles to listen to going down the road. works for me in my daily drivers, so i see no reason this setup would not work in a classic or hot rod.

for a flat tire, I still trust on the original jack and use it if needed... no probs on that.

Grew up with one blue & red it was the main family jack for years did everything with it until I finely got a hyd.floor jack from sears they would have a $99 special buy a jack & get 2 free jack stands.Still have the jack & stands.

Used a bumper jack on the right rear on a '70 Fury back in the 80's once.
It wouldn't lift the car high enough to get the tire off the ground.

I now take care to make sure all tires and brakes are kept in good driving condition.

Just in case though, I have a good spare, small floor jack, 2 jack stands, a piece of micro lam. and a 1/2" drive socket set with breaker bar, as well as a small tool kit in all my rides, except the Shovel Head of course...

I leave the original jack for the shows, but carry one of these in all my old Mopars. GM unit works like a floor jack, so bumpers don't get twisted and scratched. I removed the round "thingie" on the end, welded on a plate with "lips" to keep it from sliding off the car's frame. Good footprint, very stable, and, once upon a time, cheap as dirt at the junkyard.

71GTX471, they came in GM Caprice, Impala,Cutlass, Monte Carlo, Grand Prix models 1978-88, and some of the smaller Cadillacs. Sometimes found in Camaro and Firebird 82-02, but with a different frame plate (no round "thingie" on the end that goes under the frame.)

In 99 I went to Chryslers in Carlisle in my 74 Duster360. Once there, I realized I had a rear spring shackle break (but it broke so it was keyed together "most"of the time) . . . rather than trust my body to the bumper jack, I bought a small floor jack that came with a plastic carrying case, along with new shackles and repaired the car in motel parking lot . . . still have the jack . . . sure the bumper jacks work, but the floor jack is just easier and can use it on any vehicle/trailer !! . . .
