Converter quandry........need opinions - 11/08/17 05:06 PM

I have always used PTC for my converters and have always been happy with the results. In 2015 I built this new combo for the Cuda. We broke the new engine in on the dyno and sent that info along with the other pertinent details to PTC. That converter did not work (way too loose) so I pulled it out and sent it back to them last winter.

But this converter just never felt right. And the MPH was off in my opinion, so I finally got around to putting the car on the chassis dyno last week. The first thing the dyno operator said was that the converter didn't feel like it was hooking up to him. And we are loosing over 200hp through the drive train. Obviously, that's way too much.

Called PTC yesterday to talk about it and they acted like they didn't have time to talk to me. After getting some if the info to them, they just said 'yeah, we can tighten the converter up a bit, just send it to us'.

I am totally unhappy with this converter and felt like I got the brush-off yesterday. They have had 2 chances to get this right and I don't know what else I could have provided them as far as info.

So, do I give PTC another shot at this? Or should I move on? If I move on, is Coan the best choice? On this car, it is a big deal to pull the converter and I am tired of doing it. I would sure like to only do it one more time.

with 2 chances plus the brush off I would not want to deal with them again, just like I am doing with Hughes Engines.

If it was me, I'd send it to Lenny at Ultimate. No way PTC would get my business again after talking to me like that. I'm not a fan of PTC after having one of their converters several years ago anyway.

a post in the race/engine forum may give you some insight on your converter selection.

For what it's worth, I gained .5 seconds in ET and almost 5 MPH with a change from a 10" Transmission Specialties converter to a Dynamic from Frank Lupo that's 9.5". This is in a 3700 pound b-body with a roller-cammed 496" engine.

11.669 @117.85 MPH...to...11.071 @ 122.89 MPH!!

The converter from Dynamic cost $649 on sale, and I had it on my door step in less than two weeks. Tom

I've had dealings with 3 convertor companies in the last 2 years...

Transmission Specialties - built a conv specific to my wifes car took longer to get it than they quoted and I don't think its as loose as I requested, but it is really consistent in the car. Went from a 10" 3500ish stall to a 8" 5000 stall (that's what I asked for, for her combo) and car didn't pick up any...

ATI - broke my good conv this summer, had ATI built one to my car specs, hoping it would be like the one I broke. Car ended up picking up about 1.5 mph and a tenth (convertor I broke had 800ish passes on it). Its a hair looser than I'd really prefer, but works well

QuickDraw Convertors - sent the convertor I broke to him to have repaired. Did it in a very timely manner and was reasonably priced. I installed the convertor in my other race car when I got it back and it works just like it should for the specs I gave him.

If PTC has had 2 chances to get it right and than blowed you off, plus it sounds like they aren't even close if your losing 200 HP. If you give a convertor shop your car specs they should get it close...if they are good....

I have never dealt with PTC so I cant say anything on that. But I really like the Luppo Dynamic 9.5 converter I run in my 63 and I also have one in my boys Dart and they both work great. I have also used Turbo Action with great results. As said I dont know anything about PTC but I do know when someone treats me badly they dont get my business anymore. Good luck to you which ever converter you decide on. Ron
