How to avoid oil on small block headers at oil change?

How to avoid oil on small block headers at oil change? - 09/26/17 03:52 AM

Is it possible? I have the 90 degree adapter, not that I think it matters although it may make matters worse. Always just hosed the headers down with carb cleaner when I was done since I have cheap painted headers on right now. But I have a shiny pair of Dougs to go on at some point and would like to know how people have avoided the problem.

drape a towel or big rag over/around the header tubes.

Bend a piece of metal to catch and drain the oil away from the pipes. Reuse it every time.

Plastic shopping bag over filter as you spin it off

Plastic shopping bags are not trustworthy. Foil is also good to cover header tubes. I use formafunnel on my Acura cuz it drips all over the lower control arm and crossmember. Also on my BB Cuda.

Use a small sharp punch or a nail to put a small hole in the bottom end and catch the oil draining out until it stops dripping up scope twocents
You could also use water(in a spray bottle) to coat the headers before letting oil drip onto them work That only works as long as the pipes are not hot enough to evaporate the water off of them shruggy

All Aussie Chrysler small blocks have a remote filter factory fitted as the steering box is in the way, so not an issue down under.

How about a remote filter and avoid all the aggravation.

... don't forget the oil that continues to drain from the adapter as you remove the filter.

Aluminum foil helps

Make a trough out of a 2 liter soda bottle cut in half or more, you can leave the cap on to catch the oil or remove the cap & let it drain of if the angle is correct, thats what I use for garden tractor oil filters.

Nope, then I would have to post "How to avoid getting oil on the underside of my hood at oil change" and no one would be able to help!

In all seriousness the aluminum foil sounds like the route to go as I prefer doing changes with a warm engine. It also along the lines I was already thinking of needing something flat or blanket like, but with raised ends to prevent it just running down the low end and onto the collector.

With wide foil seems like I should be able to cover the tubes and fold up the ends to create a dam at the low end and channel it back down the sides and into the drain pan.

The last post about the soda bottle, I'll totally be using for small engine stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions.

My smart ass comment aside, I never did get a method down that was 100% fool proof when I still had the 360. My dad ended up using a relocation kit on his 408. If you like changing oil on a warm motor, then this is it. The photo is of the wrong angle, but you can still see it. He mounted the filter on the passenger side up front. Honestly, if you leave the filter where it is at it's only a matter of time until you get oil on your shiny new headers.
