Duster rear trunk spoiler, where to order one? - 09/24/17 02:12 AM

I want one of those spoilers you see on the lip of the trunk lids for a Duster...Where can I get a fiber glass one?

The generic ones are plastic and run around $100-$150. A correct fiberglass reproduction is around $400-$500. I think the 71 wing was a different style than the generic one but it would work if your not worried about originality.
The cheap ones seem to be good quality but you will want to strip the metal mounting parts and put a better coat of paint on them. I would also use stainless screws where they attach to the wing because the el-cheapos rust fairly quick.

This says concours quality ABS. I always thought the original ones were fiberglass.

But yeah, 400 bones. At least it comes with the support brackets too.

I think he might be talking about a duck tail spoiler, not a wing.

If I recall-the spoiler you want was made by Direct Connection (Sold by them anyway) and discontinued around 2003.

Oh you meant the duck tail? Sorry, nobody is oficially making them. I have found couple of ppl making their version and selling on ebay quite often on $150-200 rate.

I got long time ago an original ABS one ( first ones were made on fiberglass, seconds were made on ABS ) sometime ago thinking on repro it on fiberglass, but stuff has being hard down here to invest any kind of money.

Did they make them as recently as 2003? Wow.

Yes, there are folks making repros and they seem to vary quite a bit in terms of accuracy and finish quality. The occasionally pop up on ebay, etc.

The original ones wee attached with bolts and there are visible indentations along the leading and bottom edges...some replicate this detail, others don't.

Maybe this is obvious but early Dusters (and Demons?) had a smooth trunk lid, later cars have the spine detail...different versions of that spoiler accommodate the different trunk styles so read before you buy.

I'm hoping someone can identify a good source on these...I'm running an OEM Direct Connection chin spoiler and the duck tail would be a nice compliment.

Assuming this 72 still have the factory trunk lid, it got the spine detail

And 71 ad shows it too

And 71 Demon

IIRC, 70-71 trunk lids lack the spine, Demon or Duster. '72-'76 have it.

1971 late production change added the rib to the trunk as they were
getting a dent from slamming the flat style trunk lids. The spoiler in 1970 was the Mustang looking one and some early 1971 builds, and 1971 saw the "gull wing". There was no factory 1972 spoiler, but I am sure some dealerships installed some.

I spent a few years tracking down those old Direct Connection A-Body spoilers and snagged two off of Craigslist...I think they're cool. I traded off one of them and the other went on the car.

iirc the last one I bought off of Ebay I paid like 80 or 100 for it.

When I bought my Duster a couple month's ago, the seller threw in a
fiberglass ducktail spoiler, molded from an original DC spoiler.
I will put it on the car in the near future.

did it have all the recesses along the edge for attaching hardware, or did they smooth it out and create a provision for a mounting solution inside the spoiler to go thru the deck lid?

I've been thinking of doing that exact same thing, the Direct connection spoilers are just thin flimsy plastic. There are A LOT of boat shops around here on the gulf coast that have experienced fiberglass guys that I'm sure I could find one to work with me.

you guys could have a 3D printed version of one made as well with any and all features you would like. the price for 3D printed items has come down a bunch, very affordable for what you would be requesting. in my honest opinion.

A quick GIS came up with this. Looks like the smooth lid version, you could contact the vendor and see. HTH, Steve
