Dipstick tube in the freezer trick?

Dipstick tube in the freezer trick? - 08/21/17 05:05 AM

Has anyone successfully accomplished this? I've been sanding the end of the dipstick tube on my 440 for a while now. Still seems too tight. Does the freezer trick work? I really want to start my new engine tomorrow but we all know how bad it sucks if you crack a dipstick tube. I'm tired of sanding and I'm pretty sure my finger prints are gone. laugh2

yes freezing shrinks metal a significant amount. Wrap it in a plastic bag so the wife don't see it. You may need to sand it on a machine.

I would also worry about it getting brittle.

Use a key board air duster can turn it upside down and press the button to release the frozen propellant onto the tube, once the tube is nice and frosty knock it in!

If you have dry ice available this will work the if the above doesn't.

Cold doesn't do much on such a small diameter.
And if you could get it in like that, it will be wedged in there for life.
For sure it will break off the next time it needs to come out.

Just size it properly.

Mount the tube in a vice and use an 1" strip of sanding paper to work your way around the tube end.

I always sand for a light slip fit and use a small amount of sealer. Sure makes it nice it it needs to be removed later. twocents

I drill the block hole next size up. A little RTV seals w/o issue. Easily removed if needed.
