Shock Absorber Question?

Shock Absorber Question? - 08/18/17 12:14 AM

Hey guys, anyone know if Shocks for a 1965-70 C-body will fit and work properly on a 1969 A-body? Or will they have to much travel to them.

What is your set up?
If stock, the C body shocks would be to long.

Aren't longer shocks required if using SS springs?

Yes and some guys use the C body shocks on the cheap.

You might measure how much distance there is from C to C between the top/bottom bolts. You want the shock selection to have a certain amt of compression at rest (not my area, just sayin).

hi blue, if you use a c-body shock like Monroe 32073 ,it has a different upper bushing with a sleeve in it that is different than the a-body style, like Monroe 31131, that has the same bushing top and bottom. ronnie

Yes it is stock for right now. But what if (say down the road) I put a new set of springs under it from Springs & Things with a +2 lift. Won't it require longer shocks?

Ah... rear shocks.

Might need longer shocks with a +2" lift, but you really ought to measure when you get the springs installed. Shocks that are too short aren't as big a problem as shocks that are too long - if they extend all the way, they pick up the axle. If too long, they bottom out. You can get some specs on the OEM shocks and see how they compare to other models or PN's in a shock catalog.

When I was looking years ago, the info I got on the 65-72 C-body shocks was this:
Extended Length = 22.5" (average of a few sources)
Compressed Length = 13.5" (average of a few sources)

FWIW, A-body rear shocks are actually LONGER than C-body rear shocks by about an inch compressed and half an inch extended.

Unbolt the bottom of your current shock set-up and let the rear-end hang free. Then measure from the shock plate stud to the top shock bolt to see how much length you can handle without shock bind.

What if he puts in a 4 link, that's need different shocks.

What if he put in a Jag rear end, that'd require different shocks.

We can what if all day. None of which matters.

I would get loaded & extended C to C distances for a baseline to work with. Then add/subtract as needed.
