70 e body vin numbers

Posted By: roadrunninMark

70 e body vin numbers - 08/16/17 06:34 PM

Where on the body is the vin number imprinted, is it the cowl somewhere? I am picking up a 70 out of the junkyard, vin and data plate is missing so I want to find the vin and see if I can get a salvage title.

There is one on the core support usually under the antifreeze sticker, and one on the cowl by the vent cover. The vin from your car may be on some rebodied car. After you find the numbers do a DMV search. Is the car something special?

Those are only partial VIN's. The complete VIN is only found on the dash VIN plate, the fender tag, the Mylar driver's door sticker, and the broadcast sheet.

Not a special car, just a car that is pretty solid that could turn into a project for a friend of mine. All I know so far is that it has 14" wheels and a 904, so probably just a 318 car (motor already long gone).

I figured someone might try to do the "rebody" deal with the vin and daya plate, but I need the vin to do the dmv search. I am hoping by some miracle a broadcast sheet will still be tucked in behind the back seat or the mylar sticker is still there. Its tucked in tight by other cars so couldn't get the door open yet to see. Is it possible it would be on the transmission too, if it was original? Might be able to piece the vin # together using body and trans #s?

Not real sure on that. Somebody else here will need to answer that question.

Radiator support, cowl, and trunk drip rail. The sequence number won;t help for the VIN unless you're sure of the engine and production facility (were they all Hamtramack?)

Yes you can do this. If the transmission serial number matches the body serial number than you can determine the engine type from the transmission part number.

There are some models you will not able to determine.

383 four barrel no way to tell if it is a JH or JS model
340 - no way to tell if it's a TA or not from this method. Obviously there are other TA clues
/6 - probably can tell between a 198 and a 225

Either way I doubt your state will issue an original VIN, instead they will just issue there own number - that's what they do in CA

Challengers were also made in Los Angeles unless it was a Hemi car or a convertible

No trunk drip rail numbers on an E-body. Radiator core support and cowl only. Both on drivers side.

You should have all the info you need by the rad support # and trans type. You said it has a 904 trans. The /6 904s have a different starter location so it would be easy to tell if the original engine was a /6. If it's a V8 904, then it had a 318. They didn't put a 904 behind a 340 did they?(340 would have come with a 727) The rad support #s should show the assembly plant, year and sequence #.

Here are the #s on my 73.

B...Hamtramck
3...year
159366...sequence #

So the VIN on the car in question would be JH23G0??????? Just substitute your sequence # and the plant code from the rad support.

If assuming it's a 904 you are correct.

Not that anyone ever mis-ID'd a 904 before.

Thanks for the info. We can't find a build sheet and the mylar sticker is gone. It looks like the car was painted a different color, he's telling me it was originally a white car which I think they painted black. So he has a layer or two of paint to try and remove to find the numbers on the cowl or rad. support. I just told him to look at trans for to identify if 904 and location of starter hole.

This is like an archeology dig, except I am not there to have the fun frown

That is true, Morty! Well, looks like we put it together. It looks like it was last registered in NY. Can I have any DMV check the number or just in NY?

What is the next step to getting a title? What happens if there isn't a record available or worse case, shows either already registered (as in rebodied)or stolen and never recovered? Can I use a bill of sale from the yard I purchased it from and get a salvage title? I assume I would have to get it in NY?

You have to contact YOUR State's DMV to find out what steps to take.

Most likely you have to have an inspection and they will assign a State issued VIN number. Some States might require you to get Title Insurance.

Start with your State's DMV website and you can get started.

Good luck up
