Brake Problem

Does anyone have a source or part number for the 11x2.5" rear brake drums? I can not find drums for my '66 Plymouth Fury III for the life of me!

I did find some 11x2.5 brake drums for a 66 Chrysler 300 but they have a slightly larger friction surface and have fins whereas the original drums on my Plymouth Fury have no fins and just over 2.5" friction surface. Are these drums interchangeable?

My 66 parts catalog shows one part number for all 11x2 1/2 rear drums, 2533824

Tried that part number and no one has them in stock. Tried NAPA, Advance, Rockauto, OReilley - where else can I find these?

OK guys, I ordered the new Centric bake drums from Auto Parts Warehouse and OH MY GOD I have rarely seen such an example of shoddy chinese workmanship! Ordered a pair, one came with the counterweight crudely tack-welded on he outside of the drum, the other had no counterweight at all. Neither had the gap between the friction surface and the outside of the drum casing like the factory pieces - just 1 big, crudely cast hunk of iron. I sourced come NOS 11x2.5 drums but they are $175 EACH. Does ANYONE know of another source for these drums? Can I interchange drums from other cars onto my Fury? I'm almost afraid to try these at all - were they actually balanced or did they just tack the weight on wherever they felt to match the picture they had?

The one that came without the counterweight, could it be possible that it is balanced without the need for the weight? Do all drums need that weight on them?

the Diplomat's used an 11x2.5" rear drum on cop and taxi setups.

Not sure if it'll work in your case but you have more options available if it will.

I'm curious what kind of weld you were expecting on that weight !!!

A balance needs a specific weight - which they pick from a selection of weights. The spot weld adds no additional weight so they spot it on and they're done. If they stick welded it on then they'd have to spin it again and take weight off because the stick adds weight. Furthermore, its a cast iron drum and there are very few methods of welding cast iron. Any drum I've ever seen had the weights spot welded on.

i'm pretty sure "most" 11x2 1/2" drums will interchange because the axle stand off on the rears are the same. [i think !] the outside appearance will be different, such as fins vs. smooth, fin count and shape, etc. with that said, trucks [with 2WD, 4 1/2" bolt pattern], vans, station wagons, etc. may be something to look at. try the junk yards first for an example before you plunk down the money for new ones. [you may just be lucky enough to score a pair of usable drums] my wagner master catalog lists a different part # for your car vs some of the newer dodge/chrysler, truck/car applications that share the same drum part #.

Those groves that are missing are to slow down water getting into the brakes. The backing plate goes in there, which makes water have to make three turns to get inside, just slowing it down. These things look like junk.
