Will kickdown cables advertised for a904 work on a999? - 06/19/17 09:57 PM

I have an a999 and 318 in my car. Currently swapping in a performer intake, 4 barrel M2008 carb, and 1/2" AED wood spacer for heat soak protection. Lokar says they make a kickdown cable for the a904, but not a999. I thought the a999 was the same on the outside? Does it have a different outer case, or different kickdown lever shape than the a904?

Externally, the 904 and the 999 are the same.

Thats what I thought, thank you. Im also taking a look at the bouchillon performance setup.

with them being the same externally you might call em & ask why they are saying there is a difference (something is missing).

i'm not a fan of the lokar setup, so it is good you are considering the bouchillon. the lokar deal has cheap brackets that easily bend, and cheap cable, causing adjustment problems that may, or may not be correct due to linkage ratios. i have replaced around 10 or 12 lokar setups returning them to factory linkage because of this. the bouchillon kit looks like much better quality components, but i have only seen them installed and working, not having any installation experience, or replacement of those kits.

I got the full lokar throttle/kickdown/bracket kit installed, It was about $100 cheaper than bouchillon. When I do my charger, Im going with Bouchillon though. The Lokar kit works, but I had to fabricate a piece to site under the dual cable bracket because it sat 1/2" to low on the summit carb. Maybe its different for edelbrock and real holleys.. The pressure from the carb stud nut that holds it in place is also not enough to keep it in place, unless you torque it down to the max, which I dont like doing on carb stud nuts. The only way around it is to fill in some of the slot on the bracket (the slot that slides over the carb stud). Anyways, it works fine now, but it takes modification. Really, the kit would be perfect if the trans mount bracket were thicker or used 2 trans bolts instead of 1, and if the carb mount bracket were revised too, and made to be more adjustable and better support.

Again, maybe it works wonders on different carb/engine setups.. this is just my experience with an LA 318/performer intake/summit carb/a904(a999)

Uh-uh, the only way to make the Lokar "perfect" is to place it in a trash can.

Lol I wouldn't use it on a nice build John. It's working fine on this budget build though after the headaches were taken care of

All I know is my charger is getting something better

Either kit is fine if you understand what the lever on the transmission end needs from the throttle.

Sometimes they bolt on and nothing else is required but quite often the geometry needs to be adjusted. I'm not taking about the position adjustment, which is all a factory set up would need because the ratios are all correct from each pivot point.

The aftermarket kits will require fine tuning the ratio. If you do not know the difference between ratio and the linear adjustment. Find a factory set up.

i've used the lokar throttle and kickdown set up on numerous cars over the years and have never had an issue with them..

seems to me that people who break cables and bend brackets don't have them installed properly..

i've never had a ratio issue either.. i always use the short abody leaver so maybe thats why..

the directions kinda suck but thats the only complaint that i would have...

never been a fan of the bouchillon set up.. too cluttered and ugly looking.

the throttle/kickdown bracket installed on the carb the way the instruction show, with the bracket sitting directly on top of the carb mounting flange, put the bracket about 1/2" to low on the summit m2008 carburetor. The wires went diagonal up to the linkage. With that happening, I had to fabricate a thick piece of metal to correct it. IDK if the throttle pressure lever is different on a 81 j body, but the trans mount in the kit worked fine, its just a little flimsy for my taste. Im a little worried a rock or road debris would throw it off or bend it. Again, this is just my experience on this particular setup. I dont think summit carburetors existed when these came out.

my opinion also. and even when installed properly, the chintzy brackets bend and move because they are not properly supported and made of cheap [my opinion] material. in all the change backs i have done, all but one was installed correctly. i believe these are just a GM design sloppily changed to fit mopar applications without any thought to correct ratio differences or bracket inequities. i'm glad some have had success and are happy with the function of their installations, but i have changed too many back to the correct factory setup, and am not impressed with the design or the component quality of the locar components.

Even with beefed up brackets, the Lokar is poorly thought out. It lacks provisions for a spring to pull the trans lever forward and only a few trans levers will have the correct length to match the carb travel.

Folks who claim to be happy with them are usually satisfied with very late part throttle upshifts.

I had one installed for about a month on the B-van, Flimsey setup and adjusting it was a exercise in frustration. Of course the masterpiece of their 'kit' is the Chrysler designed cable from the early 90's 'RH' transmissions with their stuff at either end, they leave that part out. I found an OEM 4BBL linkage from another B van and promptly installed it, adjusted once and it worked perfectly.
