46re 2WD pcm in 4wd

46re 2WD pcm in 4wd - 04/29/17 03:38 AM

I put a 2000 5.9 and 46re in my tj. I had pcm issues so I bought another used one, which had different issues. I then picked up a MP pcm for 2WD Dakota r/t. All of the other issues are gone but I didn't realize the 2WD pcm would be a problem. So What is going to happen when I put it in 4low? Can a tuner switch it to 4wd?

This is deep. work

So, my '01 360/46re, when you put it in 4lo and step on it, it will "stumble". It only does this in 4lo, yet there is no connection to the pcm that the truck is in low range that I can see. shruggy

The "stumble" must be an early form of torque management so you don't twist something apart. Maybe there is a wire going to the transfer case to tell the pcm it's in low?

Don't waste your time or money on them b.s. "tuners". I'd get a computer out of a 4wd Ram if I was you: Cost you less than a tuner in dollars and aggravation. twocents

I did get a pcm from a ram, and it was bad. Honestly after the 3rd pcm I did feel like buying any more. I'm pretty sure There is a transfer case range input on the pcm for the 46re trans.

Ok, were the PCM's the same year as everything else? How is this running your gauges and such on the TJ?

Everything works 100%
Tj is a 98
Durango donor was a 2000, that had an issue where it would run 20-30 min and would die and not restart, I believe that was the " no bus" problem. It actually did that in the Durango before I pulled it apart.
I forget the truck pcm maybe 99. It had a code for the rear o2 sensor and if I watched live data while it was running, it was not reading the sensor. It wasn't the sensor and it wasn't my wiring. So I decided to try another pcm, which is the molar performance 2000 Dakota r/t pcm. I am not against having a custom tune done from someone like flyinryan, but I need a good pcm.

So back to my original question, what is going to happen when I put it in 4 low? With a 2WD pcm? Does anyone know?
And can I have my 2WD pcm tuned to a 4wd?

You are using mis-matched, and corrupted pcms. Can't help you.

Call "flynryan" and ask him. smirk

Put it in 4 low and let us know ...

as far as tuning it , Dodge software is propitiatory so I don't know if anyone has been able to break into one that old and retune it.

We are still waiting for someone to come out with a standalone to run an RE trans as far as I know.

the pcm in those have no link to the transfer case. The pcm don"t know if you are in 2 wd or 4hi or low.Good luck.

So what is it going to shift at the same Speedo mph? The dilemma i have, to get it on the road i have to have it inspected, I'm told the vin must come up in the pcm when they plug in. I don't want to pay to have the vin programmed if what I have isn't going to work.

If I was designing the computer I'd put the speedometer sensor at the output of the transfer case. Then there is no need to shift or switch anything when going into Low range.

I'd be surprised if it is more complicated than that.

In later model years, with torque management more on the engineers' minds, there may have been some input to the computer.

It's been a while since I did the swap but I think there were 2 speed sensors? One in the trans and one in the tc output. I read somewhere that it compares the 2. I started over thinking it and it just wasn't working out in my head. I drove it around the block yesterday. It shifts 1-2, 2-3 seems weird, it shifts late and would only shift if I let off The gas. I didn't get up to speed in 2hi to see how it shifts.
