Wilwood brake caliper fitting leaks?

Wilwood brake caliper fitting leaks? - 04/27/17 11:36 PM

I am in the process of replacing my wildwood calipers. The fitting that the brake hose attaches to is leaking where it screws into the caliper when I try and bleed the brakes. I used Teflon paste to seal them . Should I try Teflon tape? What else works best?
Thanks Mike

teflon paste seals better than the tape but that is for NPT, not needed in your app. it should seal by being tightened a reasonable amt & if not either the male or the female threads are fubared. If this is a banjo fitting it might be leaking at the copper washers, one on each side of the banjo fitting & the ribbed OE ones (even a used pair) seal better than the smooth replacement ones. New ribbed ones ain't available to my knowledge.

Wilwood calipers are NPT.

Oh OK, Then yes I would use some teflon paste. there is ~1500 PSI there.

I tried Teflon paste and the fitting still leaked!
The sealant that is used on the bleeder fittings appears to have a slight red color to it. Anyone know what this stuff is?

All that is left is: either the threads on the hose or the threads on the caliper are bad.

Nope. There is one more thing. Wrong fittings.

I ran into this on Willwood before. They use brake lines that use newer connector spec than the old flare.

I'm not at home right now otherwise I would post the flare type and numbers I used.

I had the very same problem just today. A seep where the brass adaptor fitting threads into the caliper, not the flared brake fitting. A wrap of teflon tape solved the problem.

For the banjo bolts? Use copper crush washers.

Morty426 my old calipers are 15 years old.I am not sure if they are the 1/8-27 NPT shown in previous post for a newer caliper. I don't think I have bad threads. The calipers are brand new and I did not damage the old threads taking them off . They are not the "bango threads" pictured in the latter post.
Dr dave How old were your calipers that you were replacing?
Did you use your old fittings?

I would inspect the male and female threads very carefully for any signs of irregularities.

Having spent a few years playing with vacuum processing systems and occasionally encountering stubborn leaky pipe threads I found that loctite works extremely well.
Make sure there is no residual fluid on the threads. Be aware if you choose the red version (permanent) it can wreak havoc with aluminum threads on disassembly unless heated first. beer

Ok so I'm not sure if my old threads are 1/8-27 or not. Gona try some Teflon tape and will let you know how I made out!!!
Thanks Mike

Update!!!
A 2x wrap of Teflon tape fixed the leak.
Thanks for the reply's that helped me solve the problem!
