Fel-Pro Head Spacer Shims - 04/27/17 12:44 AM

Curious to see if anyone has used these before and with what kind of success. I have never had to use them, but it looks like my 360 project is going to need a couple to lower compression. Do I need coppercoat or some other sealer when I use them?

I ain't used em (yet). SCE with their dead soft copper gaskets, not these felpro shims, wanted me to use Indian Head cement in the shoe polish type brown bottle but ideally to O ring the block on their items. On these it says on the pkg to use a felpro blue gasket on one side which I dont quite get. they are .020" & iirc the ad says .030" EDIT I think I would get some thicker gaskets, even some Cometics if need be for the right thickness.

Did you happen to cc your heads yet? I did a set of J heads yesterday, dae matched off the same motor and one head is 4cc off from the other and far enough off im going to use offset dowls on one side.

The good side on the open part of the chamber I can take .110 out to make the chamber round to match the bore which will net a good bit.

I mentioned doing it with the head on the block but you can do it with a gasket and felt tip marker and going with the inside of the line vs the outside.

They're 0.020, says so in all the catalogs I've looked at.

They've been used since time began by rebuild shops. I believe that FelPro would tell you if they wanted some sort of a sealer. But you're right, the instructions say to just use them with a standard gasket, no mention of any kind of goop. Probably they're so thin as to not require any.

If you need to use more than one per side IMHO you're better off with a custom gasket, at $30 each plus a new head gasket you're in Cometic pricewise.

Don't have time to wait for my cc kit, so my engine guy is going to cc my heads on Monday. I used to work for him years ago. He insists I shouldn't have a problem running 10:1 compression on pump premium and he's been building great engines for years, so I trust his input. However, once I find out chamber size, I'll get thick enough gaskets to bring compression down to 9.5:1. Just for peace of mind.

(1) Dog is keeping me straight (2) I wouldn't want more than 9.5 SCR & I would polish the Hell out of the chambers when done, any sharp edges. Holler how it turns out when the time comes.

Yes, I had already thought that it might be a good idea to polish the chambers. It only costs me some of my time. I am going to build another 360 for myself in a couple of months. Open chamber factory smog heads. What do you recommend for pistons to get some quench out of it? I would like to run close to 10:1 as I can safely get. Thanks to all of you for your input. Lee

Kieth Black as quench dome pistons for that & also you would need to mill the open chamber recesses in the heads to set that dimention (the chambers are uneven/sloped as is) to a quench distance (.040" MAX) and likely mill the quench domes also. it'd be alot of shop time. Just me I would consider some magnums before that. EDIT Steve Dulcich of Muscle Motors fame has some excellent porting articles online for those 70's smog heads (Google it).

My old 440 I ran right at 10.0 comp with 906 heads. I did use the KB quench pad pistons and got quench at right around .045. With the MP .557 cam it ran fine on 92 pump and is still running on 92 pump today in another car. But my 906 heads had been milled alot before I got them and I had to use Cometic head gaskets that were .074 thick to get the 10.0 comp with the KB quench pad pistons. You can get all different size thickness on the head gaskets from Cometic. They go from about .018 up to .128 I believe and they can also make other sizes I believe but of course they cost more. Ron
