741 case - 04/26/17 01:40 AM

a pic of the 8 3/4 that was on the 69 RR. Had traction bars. Isn't a sure grip - I know anything can happen in the past changing parts - Are there any vin numbers stamped anywhere like the engine and 4 speed ?

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 01:54 AM

Mopar assembling lines would use what parts they had as long as the gear ratio was proper for that cars 8 3/4 shruggy
The other thing to keep in mind is who knows what happened to that car before you got it, many Hemi and Max Wedge cars ended up on use car lots with non stock B and LA motors in them shruggy work

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 01:55 AM

So its possible they would have had an A31 car without a sure grip or is that the giveaway that the pumpkin has been changed ?

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 01:56 AM

By the way - tied into this mornings post about axle tension - this one spins like the 3.55 so I guess I'd better check the bee's 3:91

Not to my knowledge.

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 02:21 AM

If the car in question is a 4 spd it would not have a 741 rear.

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 02:43 AM

Thanks. What case would have been correct for a 69 3.91 sure grip?

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 02:44 AM

It is a 4 speed

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 02:50 AM

I had an original '69 RR 383 4-speed 3.23 peg leg. It had a '489 case.

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 03:02 AM

the 3:91 sure grip wasn't produced in the 741 ?

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 03:22 AM

I have a 741 case with 3:91 sure grip that I pulled out of a van down by the river , actually a van at the local junk yard many moons ago , it's now in my 71 Bee

The factory 489 case with 3:23 sure grip is long gone , wish I still had it

Yes it was but most of the ones I have found were in 68 down light duty pickups.

Re: 741 case - 04/26/17 04:18 AM

Same here, '741 housing with 3.91 SG that came out of a pick-up truck chassis...no other details, other than it was a pick-up truck.

My 1969 GTS Dart H code 4 speed car(SPD in 9-68) has the original 741 case 3.91 gears clutch type posi in it still shruggy Never say never work

I have a 741 SG with 3.91s. It's supposedly out of a '69 340 Swinger.

I had a 69 GTS 340 auto that came with a 489 case and 3.55 suregrip.

Pumpkin changed, A31 B body would have had a 489 case, A31 includes SUREGRIP so no it is not possible to have one unless the factory installed the wrong chuck in the housing.

What is the date stamped on the ring gear , an A100 I think could be had with a 3.91 with no sure grip and a 741 case.

I want to say you got hosed then ??? I am 99.9% sure my May 69 build 383 4 speed GTS has a 489 ...

There is no VIN on any Chrysler rear, only date codes, and BOM on Danas ...

Re: 741 case - 04/27/17 02:39 AM

I traded the original owner for that car, I didn't buy it new. He had been a dealership mechanic but he was a flake also, he insisted that the rear end was the original one that came in the car, he had no reason to lie about that work
I didn't say it had any I.D. numbers on it, only that it was a 741 case with a clutch type posi and 3.91 gears in it shruggy
I'm not exactly sure when Mopar started installing the 489 cases and the other Eaton type posi, I know it was sometime in the 1969 production year shruggy

I have a 3.91 SG 741 in my stash that I took out of an A100 van.

Did you ever pull the chunk and check the dates ? What is the casting date of the 741 ?

Yes and ??? Did you read what I posted ??? ... fully ??? ... I said ...

An A100 I THINK could be had with a 3.91 with no sure grip and a 741 case.

I am pretty sure an A100 had a suregrip as an OPTION too ...;)

Re: 741 case - 04/28/17 03:36 AM

I had a 3:55 Sure Grip 741 that came out of a 67 Dodge pickup that was an old farm truck. It was a slant 6 with a granny gear 4 speed. All I can say was when it left my place, it had a 2:76 open center, probably a 489 case. The 3:55 sure grip wasn't leaving with that truck.
Mid 60s pickups were great places to find Sure Grips with good gears, probably most were 741 cases. The 741 cases held up as well as any other center section case under the abuse I handed out. Gene

My apologies.

The OP had questioned in an earlier post if a 3.91 SG was even available in a 741.

When you replied to him on another post about "thinking" an open 3.91/741 was available in an A100, I read that to mean specifically/only in an A100 and only as a non SG which in hindsight is not what you said.

I replied to confirm that a 3.91SG was in fact available in a 741 case and was also, as such, available in an A100.

Re: 741 case - 04/29/17 02:26 AM

so I'm the OP and still confused. Trying to figure out if the rear was original to the car - or a possibility. With the 3.91 included in the A31 package is it safe to assume it was a SG. Whatever is in there now is in a 741 case and not a SG. What is the most likely case for a spring special A31 3.91 gear ?

Re: 741 case - 04/29/17 09:25 PM

A 741 casting 3.91 open third-member was NOT available in a '69 Road Runner.

A '69 Road Runner originally came with a 489 casting. A cone sure-grip was optional. A 3.91 open differential was not optional.

You are correct in that the 3.91 was put in 741 case and had a sure grip , pretty sure I have the remnants of one in my pile of chucks in the basement.

But your assumption is also correct as I think the trucks/vans were the only vehicles available with a 3.91 without a sure grip , that option wasn't available in a performance car , or a passenger car either as far as I know ... beer

As Dr. Diff said... 3.91 with sure grip, in a 489 case, in an A31 B body, not a 741 and certainly not OPEN with 3.91's.

What is in the car right now was not installed by the factory when the car was built.

Re: 741 case - 04/30/17 06:08 PM

Back in the 70's and 80's you would look for these centers in the junk yards or swap meets. They were a low cost way to get the gears and sure grip if you were on a budget. And guess what they would live in cars with 500 hp and street tires most of the time. But you didn't tell your buddies that it was a 741 case but you now had good gears. So a bunch of them were swapped into to cars.
