thats alot of dough (even eBay is cheaper than that), way more than I would pay, you might put an add in your local CL for a 742 sure grip pig in the ratio you are after. or the ads here or on FABO.

Guess that would mean we can't say "They are not making them anymore" now.

Seeing some of the prices some of the old original well geared center sections were bringing, that price is probably not out of line. Of course, they won't ever be numbers matching.
Now, if someone is making new housings.... Gene

Difference between new and take your chances used.

Whatever you do, don't buy a cone unit.

I think that price is fair if made with good parts. I did not pay much less 15 years ago for a new clutch type sure grip center section.

I bought one from them a few years ago. They come with the crappy Auburn units and it looked like someone went after the side adjusters with a claw hammer! I had well over $1300 in mine IIRC. I'm putting down some decent power and using drag radials so that may account for the sure-grip going away fairly quickly, but they are a poor design and simply don't last long term.

I rebuilt one about 10 years ago with a Richmond 3.55 and auburn cone style SG. Haven't had any problems with it but I don't drag race the car either.

Id also suggest starting out with a call to DoctorDiff. He has new nodular iron cases and everything to go inside them:
http://www.doctordiff.com/8-3-4-489-case-third-member.html

His price is $1375 with everything new, Nodular case, Powr Lock, gears, all set up. The nodular case is important as it is 50% stiffer than a common cast iron case. Adding his partlist prices I come up with $1041. Throw in $175 for gear setup time and $200 profit and there's your price.

With something like that you get what you pay for.

In my local Craigslist I am seeing used 8 3/4s with "Posi" to be a little more than $500. That's all greasy, just pulled out of the axle and set in a can.

R.

In your shoes I'd be looking for a Dana 60.

^ good post.

A guy here was selling a 489 case with 3.91 gears and what looked like a powerlock, but the ring gear was missing a bunch of teeth. he wanted $300.

also, good point on the D60, doctor diff has the strange dana 60's for about $2150. that seems like a great deal considering a new 8.75 third member is basically $1400...

Dr Diff is out of 8 3/4's right now.

So the choice is S60.

The cone units were the best years ago but after 50+ years they are now JUNK Never had much issue with a cone unit I had then now the sure grip is going away Dated 1965 but after all this time guess I 'll have to take care of it

Ummm...no. The cone units were NEVER the best. The power lock (powr-lok) pre dates the cone unit and was a far better design, then and now.

Re: 8.75 Center section - 04/22/17 02:04 PM

I bit on this deal. After sourcing what it would cost to get mine rebuilt locally, plus parts, plus the time to run everything around, I figured it wasn't too bad of a price. At $1400 plus $300 for new axles I was contemplating stepping up to a dana, but for my car I don't think its necessary. Mancini hasn't been real helpful about shipping charges and stuff, so hopefully they don't gouge on that, and the quality is good...
