Is this a tilt column, and what year vehicle are we talking about? Pretend we don't know what kind of car you have, help us out. Gene

The shaking and vibrating on hitting a bump might be caused by loose or worn ball joints. The clicking noise is a bit odd but it would seem to indicate an internal problem with your steering gear.

Does the column move up and down if you grab the wheel and lift it towards the dash? Does the wheel move up and down or side to side on the column?
I'm thinking the column mounting bolts might be a little loose, or maybe the bushing at the bottom of the column is bad, or has fallen out. Gene
