I would guess vibration.

Yes, that is the anti-theft bracket. The interesting thing is the factory riveted it to the base bracket using the same rosette rivets used for the dash VIN tag.

I have several with the anti-theft bracket.
All have normal rivets, interestingly some riveted from the front, some riveted from the back

Not to hijack the thread but does anybody have a source that repairs the cassette player? Mine doesn't work and I'm assuming that most don't.

The brackets mccannix is showing are on the sides of the main bracket are they part of the bracket that passes over the top as in the first ebag auction, now I see the same seller has another one listed with that bracket, any more info on these brackets IE later addition, I've never seen them before & now there's 2 showing up & both from the same guy.

It's the rivet attaching the anti-theft bracket to which I was referring.

The early 70's models used two 1-87-1 3501522 Torque Screws, on on each side; they are listed in the 70-71, 72 & 73 parts manuals. The head was designed to snap off after installation. They're a real PITA to remove.

The torque screws aren't listed in the 74 parts manual. At some point during these years the method for theft deterrent changed to the bracket and rivet design reflected in the previous posts.
