EFI: Fuel Cell or In Tank

Dudes, I am trying to decide between two build options for my current project.
The car: '67 Barracuda Fastback
The Build: Nasty Big Block (440) Street Machine

I started building this 12 years ago. Back then, I cut out the spare tire well, because it was hacked up. My plan back then was to weld in a flat piece, and then install a fuel cell. In 2005, I was going to just run a carb.

Fast forward to 2017, there are easy fuel injection kits, and Spectra tanks with electric fuel pumps. So, I want to go fuel injection now.

Here are my two choices:
Choice#1
Weld in flat trunk floor
After market 16 gallon fuel cell
External EFI fuel pump

Choice#2
Get a new spare tire well and weld it in
Install Spectra Tank with internal EFI fuel pump

From a cost perspective (just counting fuel system - not EFI system) what would you do (given that my trunk floor is already cut out)?

This car is going to be my rough, blunt object - instead of my nice looking cruiser.

I like having a functional trunk. I'd pop a floor in it and do a factory style tank just for convenience.

Cell will require more safety work to segregate the trunk from passenger area

I'm missing the point, its possible? to flat floor it, and? install a cell underneath, with fill tube/etc thru the top, which is the direction I would pursue.

It's all possible. It's a fastback without a ton of room in the trunk. It'd be cool to go back to the factory way and get an in-tank system like all the late model cars use. My .02.

TanksInc tank, done. I don't see the appeal of a cell outside of a pure racecar.

I'm not asking what is possible - I can build anything. I was asking opinions about cost - given the steps I took 12 years ago, before the EFI options we have today.

Trunk space is not a concern - and I can fab an aluminum barrier to keep the passenger compartment separate. I will mount the battery in the trunk anyway.

I am leaning toward putting a stock tank back in. One of the sticking points that is specific to a '67 is that the factory configuration has only 1 tank strap, and it runs perpendicular to the frame rail. So, this is different than the familiar, '68 on up 2 strap, parallel to the frame style. If I replace the trunk - I'd just put the '68 style in it - but it could be a little more work to make the change.

I would finish flat flooring the trunk. Next I would fabricate my own under-floor fuel cell with a filler neck going to the factory location. This would be way cheaper than any aftermarket/efi tank. During fabrication you can make your own internal sump or baffles for the fuel pickup. I would run an external in-line EFI pump. I've used them in the past and I like them.

This aspect of our hobby has been evolving quickly. Fuel systems have come a long way in the last 5 years, especially for EFI conversions.

Gone are the days of intricate baffles, sumps, fuel traps and/or multiple snow mobile style pick-ups in an attempt to get air free fuel to the motor.

Now, you can use a stock tank, cut a hole in the top, stuff in a properly sized Holley Hydromat and plug the access hole with a fuel cell style blocking plate kit. Done, and it will out perform any of the older technology down to the last gallon.

Fuel pumps can either go inside the tank or outside the tank. Simple.

The latest trend is to use PWI controlled fuel pumps with no return. Return style regulators work well too.

In your case, I would put a flat floor in and mount a larger capacity fuel tank under the floor taking advantage of the extra room you have. Added fuel capacity is nice with a hungry big block.

If your going to cut out the spare tire well look at using a 1st Gen Mustang tank.

They bolt right in the hole the well leaves in the floor.

You can buy them EFI ready and even with side filler neck.

I didn't think about those tanks that doubled as the trunk floor.

put the proper trunk back in and buy the proper tank with internal pump and be done. be a lot cleaner looking, function like it should and you'l have a trunk you can actually use..

Fits flush in the trunk, side fill for the stock A body neck, angle up in towards the rear so the rear bumper hides most of it and ready to go.

Gets the weight all the way to the rear of the car and higher up than the stock tank and frees up a lot of room under the car.

Pump in tank is quietest and most durable. It also packages well with current choices available. That would be my suggestion. I like a usable trunk and spare tire when not on the track... but sounds like that is just bonus in your application.

I have the pump in the tank (Aeromotive Phantom) which was all that was available before the specific tanks for a-bodies actually came out. It's nice, very quiet, picks up fuel very well too.

I did this to get the tank tucked up instead of spacing it down, and if the pump goes it's easy to change.


Now that the purpose built tank exists, that's a great option.
