413 crank ID - Educate me on RB Cranks - 06/04/08 12:56 AM

I picked up a what is supposed to be a 413 crank the other day for a song. It has a 6-bolt flange (I've heard industrial 413's had an 8-bolt flange), so I thought it was as good a canidate as any for a 451 build. Looking at it closer, now.... It has these "tangs" jutting off the 3/4, 5/6, & 7/8 rod journal locations. I don't see any #'s on this thing anywhere, how do I I.D. it? And does anyone know what I've got, here?

413 crank will be forged and probably as you said "good as any for th 451 build"
If it wer mine I would make shure it is dimensionally correct, hav it balanced & run th stuffins out of it

I remember those tangs on my 64 413 be sure you have the correct main bearings for the crank. The thrust bearing is different on certain years.

I've run across a few 413 cranks over the years with the "tangs" you describe. Ran one in my old 440 boat motor back in the day. Machinist told me I could just cut off the tangs; they don't do anything. Probably shaved about 2 ounces off altogether.

well, thats all good news! I thought maybe I had purchased scrap-metal. The 451 plan coming along slowly but surely, Now have a block, a crank, & a set of 452 castings that I may or may not use....

No. Its not as rusty

That one does not appear to have the tangs I'm talking about.

I'll try to get a picture of the thing so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

Don't bother with the picture, most of us have already seen one or a picture onf one. Just take a disk grinder to the "tangs" and cut them off and blend the area into the crank.

I don't know why they are there, probably a remnant of the forging process that the factory engineers figured could be left on, saving a couple minutes of prep time per crank. Or else someone got the idea that they would sling oil onto the cam or whatever. Whatever the reason they are not necessary and can be removed.

here's a crank from a 1962 413 with the 6 bolt rear flange and the tangs.

Yep! Thats them. okay, I'll pass on grinding them myself. I'll just have the machinist take care of them when he cuts the mains & the counterweights down (451 prep).
