BELCHING FLUID?

BELCHING FLUID? - 10/09/16 08:34 PM

Noticed lately our 2000 Plym. Voyager has been needing p/s fluid, leaving spots (large ones) in the driveway. Added some here and decided to let it run while doing some underhood cleaning. Noticed the top of the resevoir getting fluid on it, wiped it off, and later seen the same. Is it possible the pump is causing this "belching"?

Has the system been opened up lately, other than just taking off the filler cap, or did it just start out of the blue?

Has been loosing it somewhere, assumed rack or hose failure, but noticed the oily resevoir yesterday. Been leaking a week or so. Going to shop tomorrow

I had an issue when I had to remove the PS unit. Got air trapped and had a heck of a time getting it purged. It belched oil on every turn of the wheel. In all the times of working on a PS issue, never had one quite like it.

Yours sounds like it may be just worn out, or possibly a small hole or lose fitting allowing air into the system, and pushing the oil out when pressure builds???

There was a post on a E-Body ps unit that had a small rust hole in one of the plates and leaked oil all over the place. Like one said, how can rust materialize in a unit completely filled with oil.

Let us know what you find out.

Sorry I could not be of help on this one.

These are extremely sensitive to fluid levels. Your leak is most likely the cooler on the engine cradle rusted. Any air in the system causes fluid aeration and overflow.

Find and fix the leak. Add some fluid and drive it. Top off as needed. I like to get them hot and bleed the air out, then top em off the next morning.

Pump is bad. Realived it's not the rack.

My 99 needed a pump too. The body of the pump gets rusty from being close to the exhaust manifolds and rusts out.

Be patient when refilling. Since the reservoir is a remote fill. It takes many on / off cycles allow air to bleed out from the tiny reservoir.
