Sounds like a 1974 model year hood. Is it original to the car? any pics?

Re: 71 - 74 Charger " NASCAR" hood? - 02/12/09 01:22 AM

There's some rhyme to reason with the 71-74 hoods I just can't remember it. It goes something like this:
1971 - cowl vents across entire hood (example: 30-inches)
1972 - cowl vents across hood, divided in center by a gap so it looks like two vents (30-inch)
1973 - cowl vents across hood but only 24 inches long
1974 - no cowl vents
Of course - 73 hoods can be found on 74 cars, 72 hoods on 73 cars, etc.

74 didn't have any cowl vents.
I think NASCAR used flat hoods

Nope. This picture clearly shows bulges.

To avoid making anyone unhappy, I pulled this image from http://www.seriouswheels.com/cars/top-1972-Dodge-Charger-NASCAR-Race-Car.htm

Yes it does and the hood also.
I guess I was thinking of the Satellites that ran flat hood.

Some 71 hoods also had a gap in the middle between vents. Mine is an original 71 Super Bee with a first month build date.

I allways have associated those are second half 71 year production... do you have bucket back panels in one piece and small release button or a panel with a separate covers to hinges ( used on big release buttons like 70s )?

One piece seatback panels are commonly asociated with second half production, same as 4 bows headliners instead 6 bows... those are details of 72s an laters, same as normally the hood ( without the cut out of course )

As you can see from the photos of Pettys car it had vents. The hood you have is a 74 hood

Okay ya'll... I have it figured out; here we go!

1971 thru 1974 Chargers came with hoods.
The end.

Seriously now - I have ALL ORIGINAL cars/hoods; I just went and took pictures of all but one. Here are the results:

1971 Charger 500, 383, flat hood, cowl vents WITH gap in center
1971 Charger Superbee, 383 magnum, bulge hood, cowl vents NO gap
1971 Charger R/T, 440 sixpack, air grabber hood, cowl vents NO gap
1971 Charger R/T, 440 magnum, louvered hood, cowl vents WITH gap
1974 Charger SE, 440, flat hood, NO cowl vents
197x Charger UNK, UNK, power bulge hood, ???? (this hood is in storage - will check tomorrow!)

Well i guess me and charger440sixpack have non original R/T hoods used on a Super Bee?

I'm sure the different hoods have more to do with where they are built rather than production year. I know that different factory's had slightly different ways of applying decals and routing wires, etc. Either way it's no big deal really.

I am not 100% sure if the hood on my car is the original hood, but there is no doubt that it is a 71 hood because that is the only year they made those types of hoods. The AG hoods are different and were used in 72 too.

Thanks!

I love FC7 it really draws a crowd at the shows. Kids and the ladies do like it alot. They always ask if it was a real color.

The fender mounts are modified plymouth B body units. I wanted painted lights and Dodge only had smaller Chrome ones for 71/72. Plymouth had the longer painted style that would mount either over the wheelwell or on the hood depending on the type of hood you got on the roadrunner or GTX. I loved their look so i modified the fenders to take the plymouth style. I am going for as little chrome as possible.

Re: 71 - 74 Charger " NASCAR" hood? - 02/13/09 05:08 PM

oh yeah, ive got an 8 3/4 that measures about 64" wide at the wheel flange is that right for the car?
i was thinking of swapping in a 68 b-body 8 3/4 for a deep dish wheel look.

thanks for all the help

Re: 71 - 74 Charger " NASCAR" hood? - 02/13/09 08:32 PM

Not sure on the wheel backspacing. The axle is a stock 8 3/4.

I am running 265/60/r15's on 15 x 8 cop car rims from stockton on all 4 corners and have plenty of room.

The hood looks like a 72-74 hood with the power bulge. I think 74 went vent less.

weird...

I don't have pics because I don't own the car any longer, but I had a 72 Charger Ralley with the bulge hood and no louvers. It reminds you of the Ramcharger hood but non functional. Oh, the car was still all original paint so the hood was factory.

The original hood for my '72 Rallye has the previously mentioned small gap in the louvers.

My bad, I didn't understand the post correctly, my 72 charger had the louvers for the cowl just as the one above, I was thought you were talking about the fiberglass insert in the bulge. Sorry !

Now to really mix things up. this weekend at the World of Wheels car show in Milwaukee i talked with a guy who had his black on black 72 charger since he was 16 and never changed the rallye hood...it had no vents!

I'll post some pics later.

The mystery continues...

No mystery...his hood was replaced.
When Mopar went to the "no vent" style hood, they ALSO switched the wiper squirters from being a hood mounting type, to a wiper arm mounted type. That happened in 1974. Ask that guy where his wiper squirters are located...I'll bet he's running the 74-later wiper arms as well. I'd also check the front underhood deflector...I'm willing to bet it was the shorter 73/4 version.

The factory supplied replacements (a.k.a. crash parts) used ALL styles, depending on when they were stamped. I've personally seen 71 Bee / R/T hoods with 73 cowl vents. Mopar never installed them this way...but they were available as crash replacement parts. Keep in mind, these parts WERE used to repair damaged cars, or if you bought parts over the counter. It's possible to have ANY year hood louver style, depending what was available at the time.

As for ORIGIONAL HOODS....

71 used 2 styles....all louvers with NO gap, OR louvers with ~2" gap

72 used the 2" gap on the majority of hoods...

73 used the 2" gap or the 8"? gap (I've not measure the actual gap, but there is quite a wide gap, with few louvers)

74 used the 8"? or NO louvers at all.

Also, you can put a 73/4 hood on the earlier 71/2 with no modifications( as far as installing them), however, if you try to put a 71/2 hood on a 73/4, IT WILL NOT CLOSE, unless you modify the underside deflector.

thanks 440, I was wondering when you would come on here to straighten some of this stuff out.

I agree with you I think these are parts he modded over the years. It was a P coded 72 charger. As he was showing it to me I noticed the following:

1. standard shoebox dash
2. Rallye bulge hood w/ no vents - the bulge was also painted flat black
3. P on the vin which I thought was 400 - 2Bbl, but it was a 400 4 barrel (Tquad on tquad intake with the correct air cleaner)
4. E body style spoiler in the correct location
5. Definately a custom interior, but all of the creases and seams fit perfectly for a stock interior.

It was a very nice car, but something in me said there is NO WAY this is 100% stock.

On the hoods...did the hoods differ in 71 per factory or was it a mid year change?

My cousin in law runs a Goodyear shop in Milwaukee.

I bought the Nascar Eagle 1's about 3 or 4 years ago.

He told me i was lucky because they were going to stop making them.

I like the yellow lettering...fitting for a super bee

For what it's worth, you COULD get a 72 Rallye with the P-code 400 2v. Starting in 72, the 318 was the std Rallye engine, with the 340 4v, 400 2v, 400 4v, 440 4v, or the 440+6 as options.

HOWEVER... ALL 72-4 Charger Rallyes got the "rallye" dash instead of the std. bar dash

The ONLY way to get a buldge hood on a 72-4 Charger, was to order the Rallye package. The Buldge hood was NOT available on any other Charger.

So I'd say the guy had a standard Charger with the added goodies. Which is 100% acceptable, as long as you don't try to pass it of as original.

Wish I could honestly answer this for ya. I don't have enough info to make any informed statements on this. There are 2 71 R/Ts local to me that are low milage originals...I need to do some investigation work on which hood style they have and where/when they were produced. I'll keep ya posted.
