UPDATE: Green Bearing install question - 09/24/16 03:31 AM

Hi all. I'm about to install some bearings and reinstall my axles. When I bought my supplies I forgot to order the foam gaskets. Can I make the from something else. If so, what?

Also what should I use to lube the shafts as I press on the bearings and the collar? Wheel bearings grease? Trans fluid? shruggy

Any gasket material will work,

Pack the bearing with grease, But the press on collar should be dry with no lube

Sorry. Should've mentioned green bearings. I'll update the title. Please, no green vs tapered arguments. tsk

UPDATE: excuse me for being such a putz. I completely blanked on the fact that they bearing kit already had the gasket in there with the new retainer plate.

Does this look right to you? If you look at the area between the bearing and the retainer plate there looks like there is about 1/4 of an inch there where the bearing could continue to go forward but it won't. The bearing collar is on as well. No matter if I press from behind the bearing or behind the bearing collar it doesn't budge. I believe it's on as far as it can go but would like your opinions. This is my fist time pressing on bearings. I'm using a harbor freight 20 ton press.

I think it's good to go. Last pics posted was passenger side. This one is driver side. It's stops at the same point and I used two different methods to press on each side. Passenger side I did collar and bearing together. This side I did the bearing and collar seperately. They both stop at the same point. Passenger side bearing is slightly harder to turn but I think it's still within what should be normal resistance.

I always spray a small amount of penetrating oil like WD40 on the axle to keep the bearing from galling when I press it on.
I install the retainer collar dry.
Done hundreds of them this way with never an issue.

Everything went together really smoothly. I hadn't done the green bearings before or the adjustable tapered rear bearings. I'd only done tapered bearings on the front end. I'd read here that the greens are pretty easy. After talking to drdiff who sent me a simple step by step I finished it all up. Car is rolling again and all is good. I decided not to run inner bearing seals. Don't know if it's true or not but I figure allowing the diff fluid to touch the sealed bearing should keep them cooler.
