Trunk Pan Weld Joint Sealer Question - 06/02/08 09:34 PM

Anybody have any advise on where to go to find the best weld joint sealer for my new trunk pan that I just installed? I want to seal the joints where I spot welded it and notice that Eastwood has a sort of paint on product for that, but the original product that I cut out was like a spreadable rubber compound of some sort. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! Chris.

Oh and whats the best product as far as a "rust converter". I see that Eastwood has a rust converter then I've seen Naval Jelly to brush on and wipe off. What's best? I want to use it on the underside of the car in the rear (just surface rust - great metal on the frame and on the back skin of the back quarter panels.

What you're talking about is seam sealer. There are about a million different kinds, for all different purposes. Any kind of brushable, flexible seam sealer will work. You can spend as much or as little as you like. I went with an $18 quart of brushable stuff made by Evercoat that I picked up at Carlisle. The best stuff that I have used is made by 3M, and it comes in a tube for your caulking gun. It's expensive though, around 40 bucks a tube. You've got lots of options here, but the important thing is that you use SOMETHING to seal the seams, otherwise moisture will get between them and start to rust, especially if you did'nt use weld thru primer.

Thanks. It is all prepped and about to be welded so I'm still in good shape (I did all the prep work, but am having it welded so since I'm not a welder, what is weld through primer?)

Good advice on the sealer. I'm on it. Thanks and let me know about the weld through primer. Chris.

This stuff works great. Someone here on Moparts told me about it.
