I use a set of solid lifter with zero lash and use them to check all my motors with hydraulic cams on both piston to vavle clearances as well as both intake and exhaust lobe centers scopeupI do use a set of lite checking springs with a dial indicator on the retainers on the close ones(less than .125 P to V) thumbs

measure your preload or know the preload dimention that you plan to use & take a pair of junk hyd lifters & with spacers block the cup at that dimention down from the snap ring & weld it in place then use em to check PV clearance. this will duplicate exactly what the eng will see. I would also measure/check wipe pattern/pushrod angle at adjuster cup/clearances-pushrod cup to rocker/retainer to rocker/retainer to seal/coil bind
