Need Help - How do you remove a pilot bearing?

I can't seem to figure out how to remove this. I can destroy it, but thats not what I want to do lol.. I am thinking something like a pulley remover but I think the hole is too small. Is there a tool specifically out there for this?

There is a puller for the pilot bearing. I would replace if you pull it out.

I have not tried it on a bearing, but for a bushing, this worked for me.

Do you have a metal clutch alignment tool?

If so;

Fill the cavity about 5/8 or more full with wheel bearing grease.

Insert tool.

Tap on the clutch alignment tool with a hammer, a brass hammer is advisable.

Add more grease as needed & repeat.

The hydraulic pressure will start the bushing to move out.

Been a long time, but it always worked for me.

The one I have is not kind to the bearing. A small slide hammer with a hook on it works also.
And as Barry said, the grease and input shaft works very well with the bushing.

You will need a piece of steel round stock that fits tightly in the hole, long enough you can hold it with your hand. Pack the hole with bread. That's correct lunch bread, wheat white it don't mater. I think I even used a hot dog bun once. Now put the round stock in the hole and use a hammer on the exposed end of the steel round bar and hit it hard. You should see some movement of the bearing. Pack some more bread in the hole and repeat.

To install the new bearing or bushing: Clean the hole. Put the bearing in the freezer over night. This will shrink it enough to allow it to quickly slip into place.

Grease or bread(cleaner) works fine.

Here are some 2 and 3 finger internal and external pullers that would probably work.

But they are not the best way, I have a blind hole pullers that is made for specific range of bushings that goes on that big slide hammer. It is 2 pieces and you slide it into the blind hole and screw it together and it expands and a lip locks into behind the bushing and then you use a slide hammer.
Not sure if I have a picture of it? I will keep looking.
Mean while I would use grease or bread if I was you.

I think I will try the bread theory, but I must say, until I see it work I am a doubter.. lol.. Thanks guys, I'll let you know.

Remember that there are two different bushings depending if they are for a 4 speed crank or an automatic crank.

Wetted down toilet paper works too......grab some sheets off wall, then wet it in the sink now, not toilet water....

I know you said you didn't want to destroy it, but that part is easy to find at any part store. 53009180AB is the part number, just in case things don't work out.

I have done the grease packed half way and find some round stock close to fitting tight if it's close you can wrap some masking tape around it till it fits snug then just hit it with a good size hammer

This was the standard way to remove pilot bushings for the last 100 years.... Works really well...

As an ad here, IF you use a pilot BUSHING, NEVER lube it with anything... Bushings are self lubricating and lubing them can cause clutch chatter.... Been there done that.....

That method always worked for me too. A piece of wooden dowel rod from the hardware store in the proper size will work if you don't have an extra input shaft.

The OP's setup appears to be an adapter bearing, not bushing. The grease, bread, toilet paper packing might just ooze past the individual rollers when smacked. The internal-jaw puller Jim posted works every time. Harbor Freight has them.

I use this tool. Works great. It is a Snap-on, I've had it for decades. Probably costs a million dollars now...

I saw it was a bearing but thought this method might still work without purchasing a puller..

go to youtube , there are many videos showing it done with bread , grease and even wet paper.

You could possibly rent a slide hammer at the parts store.

fill it up with grease put a thin rag over it and hammer a wooden dowel close to same size in bushing will pop out.
Have used tree limb whittled down.

FYI... this is another sure option although not practical for the home mechanic I realize. Just wanted to make sure you knew about a tool like this. It expands when you screw it together and locks tight behind the bushing or bearing. Yes you have to have the correct size as they have different ones for different size bushings. this one fits a nice range of bushings, not just one size. I have 3 of these.

It screws onto a puller or a 5/8 fine thread slide hammer for faster service.
I have used them to rebuild roper truck pumps and many other little jobs like yours.

DUH! lots of unnecessarily difficult suggestions here.

Get an electric drill and the right size bit for 1/4-20 thread tap. Drill halfway between the ID and OD about 180 degrees from each other. Then tap. Insert 1/4-20 bolts and pull out as you wish.

The roller part of the bearing is available as its own part but usually either the small one or the large one with the big steel ring cost the same from RockAuto.

If you buy the new assembly, it's easier to drill and tap the holes on the bench.
