back wheels turning on jackstands

back wheels turning on jackstands - 08/01/16 10:41 PM

I'm having a problem with my rear drums heating up.Maybe I'll start another thread about that..
Trying to solve that problem I had the back of the car on jackstands. Put in D and only the left wheel turned, right didn't, or just a lttle bit. In Reverse, the right wheel turned and the left didn't.
Is this normal? And yes, the wheels turned free by hand in neutral.
1971 Newport, 383 with 727 trans and standard rearaxle.

if you have an open rear, only 1 wheel will turn. you need a sure grip to have bolt wheels turning.

easy test. with the back of the car on jackstands, engine off and trans in neutral, turn one of the wheels forward, if the other one also turn forward then you have a sure grip. if it doesn't then you have an open rear.

That is normal, most cars are only one wheel drive. Limited slip was a performance option.

Ok thanks. I knew that when turning one wheel by hand, the other one turns the opposite direction or won't turn at all. I thought this would be the same when the wheels were powered by the engine but apparently this isn't.
Back to my problem: heating brakedrums...
