Replacement glass kits and quality ?

Replacement glass kits and quality ? - 07/02/16 08:29 PM

I am hoping someone can comment about their experiences with replacement glass.
We purchased a complete glass kit for a 70 GTX in a grey (smoked) tint.
ALL of the side glass has small depressions about every 1.5" on the edges that I am being told is from the tempering process. They are very noticeable more so than in the picture, and I find these to be quite objectionable especially on the top of the front door glass and wing windows?

Wish I was a better photographer spank

There are limited sources for the smoked tint glass so it may just be sloppy manufacturing.

So my next question is has anyone bought either clear or green tint glass kits from AMD or other sources that did not have these depressions and if so who was the source ?

Thanks,

I was having a hard time finding front door glass for 68 gtx that did not have waves about three years ago I got two sets from AMD and sent them back. Ordered glass from auto city classic and it was great, But the way thing are today they might not be using the same manufacturer as they were back then. I have used at least six glass sets from AMD and the only thing that I like was the Chrysler logo. Windshield and back glass are fine , but side glasses have issues.

I have recent repro glass on my T/A the shop installed, but I'm pretty sure it's AMD.
The edges of the quarter glass have little "scallops" along the edge. That along with the cloudiness/polarization discussed here in another thread makes todays repro glass fairly mediocre IMO. But other than OE it's all we got.

Detroit Muscle TV did a article on the car they're/was doing. Had a guy make the windows for the Mercury that was featured on the show. He's known as "glass guy Chicago" and he's on FB. Might be something to check out at least here's a link of the video.

If its what I think its from the clamps used to hold the glass as its tempered.. If you look closely you can find them in most if not all stock tempered glass not using a horizontal tempering furnace....

Thanks for the replies. I talked with Auto city and they said theirs will most likely have them, AMD said theirs did not but might be wavy as mentioned above. I did some more research on this board using the search feature and will be calling ECS on Tuesday for their comments.
Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky but I am getting tired of overpriced reproduction crap that's "good enough" and I've had a run of these experiences since about January. confused

I do want to mention they have been awesome to deal with and have tried very hard to help with this problem. It goes back to their supplier who gets the glass from Guess where whistling flame

That's exactly why I asked. I went through this issue on my A12 and learned there are only a few glass manufacturers and lots of distributors.

I had the best luck with JRD International. I've heard they are the supplier to ECS but have no verification of that. Your mileage may vary....Good Luck

Last info I had JRD International is the supplier to ECS, and if ECS is still using PPG, that's their other supplier...Charley Vahey is the glass "guy" at ECS that you want to talk to should you require any info

As for the OP, IMHO your better off dealing with ECS to obtain the best pieces of glass currently on the market, ESC has a large assortment of original glass in stock for use in comparison to the repro glass received to check for shape, curvature, access holes, etc, etc to assure you of the best fit/finish

Can you post what you end up finding out from ECS or wherever? I'm contemplating at LEAST front and rear glass whether or not to get new or try and clean and polish my originals. Nothing wrong with the originals that I can see as far as cracks.

Thanks
