yep it happened to my 78 caprice. That thing pinged and rattled so much it started to make the motor knock. It might of been the dieseling causing it too.

I would think it would be rough on the rods first.
My EX had a 01 Silverado with the 4.3. It even said in the owners manual it would ping on 87 octane and that was OK!
I told the service manager it was harmful and he told me nope! We ran 89 in it and didn't worry about it.

Piston crowns, rod bearings, main bearings all suffer.

I've seen piston tops that looked like someone hammered them hard with a ball peen hammer.

I melted a piston with detonation when I was young and dumb. Talk about laying some smoke.
