18x8 front wheels on a 73' Satellite/Roadrunner?

18x8 front wheels on a 73' Satellite/Roadrunner? - 05/12/16 01:41 AM

I just put some 18x10 Torq Thrust M on the rear, I would like to do 18x8 on the front. The 18x8s are only offered with 4.5 backspacing. I believe the Satellite's front backspacing is listed as 3.75, but that was for 15" rims that didn't clear some parts. Are there any Satellite owners here that can confirm 18x8 with 4.5 backspacing will fit?

Update
I can confirm that 18x8 wheels with 225/55/R18 tires fit the front of a 1973 Plymouth Satellite just fine.

Are you going to lower the front a tad? (seems to sit a bit high is all work )

Yep, I would like to. I'm currently a poor graduate student so it's one job at a time frown

Just tossing this out there for reference. 17 x 9 on front and 18 x 10 on back.

The front is a tad high but those cars always look a bit low in the rear. That low quarter panel opening makes it seem squatty compared to the taller front opening. I had a 74 RR for 13 years. It always looked low when the rocker was parallel to the ground.

Must say, I like those darker rims with the white paint job.

Forgot I could adjust the height this way, I did a front end rebuild a few years ago and set the torsion bars in 'stock' position. I thought I would have to change it by getting some 1" or 2" drop spindles for the front. feets is correct that the rear wheel well opening starts lower than the front.

However, I did just find this warning about using torsion bars to adjust height: "The torsion bars are a SPRING that instead of going up and down, they TWIST! If the bars are twisted more than they need, the front end will have no spring to it and the front end won't lift or TRANSFER weight to the rear. The rear can't rise (not the greatest thing anyway)against the stiffness of the front end.

The higher you go the stiffer the front end.(try it!) Go to low like laying the subframe on the rubbers (pyramid) and the front end won't lift because the spring in the torsion bars is unwound and the whole weight of the nose will have to rise UNAIDED BY THE SPRING EFFECT of the torsion bars. (set the front end down on the rubbers and try it. Pull up on the inside of the grill support with both hands. You won't be able to lift the car. When adjusted correctly, it will pull up easily and rebound easily when you let go) That's the same thing the car wants to do, lift the front, transfer the weight to the rear. (more to it)

WE MADE MANY MISTAKES IN THE '60S"

A bit of power and a proper rear suspension will lift a front end without too much trouble.

This car stayed low in the front. When I was in the boost the rear would rise 4" and the front would lift almost the same amount.
