anyone try it as per the Mopar Muscle article? I have a couple that need rebuilt and would like to save a couple of bucks. Wondering how hard can it be?

Easier than the old ones. Mostly, the contacts in the solenoid wear out, causing the starter just to "click" when ya hit the key. Sometimes cleaning them help; other times we've brazed the contacts and disc up and resurfaced them. I've never had to actually replace one because it couldn't be fixed. FYI, they can be damaged by the old smack it with a hammer trick; it cracks the permanent magnet.

Never saw the article, but I've done quite a few by replacing the contacts. I still have my personal one under the bench that got new contacts but I've yet to run it

Toyota sells them, and its funny they rebuild them all the time.

Wasn't too difficult. Hardest part on that rebuild was removing the right angle plug for the positive cable and starter signal, but that's not really part of a rebuild.

One of the easiest and most rewarding repairs you can do.I have easily done over a hundred of them from working at Honda and Toyota dealers over the last 23 years.I can get you the good Nippondenso OE contact kits with all new insulators and hardware.Just let me know which ones you need and send me a PM

Almost never any reason to go into a mini except replacing contacts.

looks like I'll be saving a few bucks on my next engine build, as I still have the stock mini that came off my Dakota, it worked but I was leary of using it since it had 100K miles on it. looks like about an hour or so and I can have the piece of mind of a brand new one!

I think it was the latest issue of Mopar Muscle that just did a big article on rebuilding the mini starters with some good pics etc. I didn't read it but it looked to be pretty comprehensive.

I just found this. Just about the same as the MM article, but the pics are better.
