What distributor advance springs do you have?
They may be too weak to hold the mechanical advance steady at idle.

At idle it's ok ...even at 1500 rpm it's ok .....as Sinn as I go higher the spread is huge and I can't set it

And it backfires when holding it at about 3000 rpm

What he said, or a vacuum leak

Leak would be my 1st guess as well.

fuel pres.bad pump, restriction in line(debris) or worn pump rod. pulsing rpm sounds like a vacume leak.make sure you have your plug wires indexed rite, its easy to get mixed up somtimes.

Hot wire jumper from battery positive to coil positive to ensure that you are getting consistent proper voltage to distributor. Be aware for those running points that you are bypassing ballast resistor so do not run this way for too long as will eventually cause point damage if you are running same.

If all is now well,,,then check all ignition wiring from ignition switch forward to determine if bad switch, wiring, connectors etc, is cause of the erratic idiocyncratic conditions you are experiencing.

Weak or irregular electrical input to coil can cause a wealth of mysterious consequences.
