Anyone know anything about Power Window repair

Anyone know anything about Power Window repair - 05/30/08 09:47 PM

Vehicle in question is my 65 Fury Wagon.

Front windows have always worked properly. Went out today and noticed the drivers door window isnt functioning.

Not too concerned about the rears as I hardly ever have anyone in the back seat.

Where do I start with the troubleshooting process on the drivers door window being inop?

Take the highest probability guess - a stuck motor.

Not unlike the flat-rater approach for disassembling front ends, beat on it.

With the ignition on and the switch held in the direction you wish the window to move, take the flat of your fist of your other hand and smack the inside door panel in the approximate area of where the motor is. If you don't know the exact location, try various places.

The harder you smack, the more likely you are to free it.

Be more conservative in your whacking of a concours restoration...

Good for diagnosing.
Good for getting a stuck-down window back up in a downpour.

If this has no action, you are either

a. not smacking hard enough or
b. have a switch/connection problem.

Note that if this does get the window moving, you still have to repair or replace the motor. (Neither does turning up the radio permanently fix a rod knock.)

do the other windows work?
Generally if you didn't notice the window getting slower, I would guess it is a switch problem.
The main switch goes bad.

The passenger front works, none of the others work right now.

Had a situation where the passenger front got stuck halfway and a few days later it worked and hasnt given me problems since.

You really need to try and find a factory service manual for that car. It makes things way easier. It will have wiring diagrams and trouble shooting instructions.

How well would a MOTORS manual from 1970(covering models 1964-1970) work for me?

Although this could be a symptom of lousy connections, it is a textbook example of old-car-stuck-window-motor syndrome. (Bouncing around freed the right side motor.)

Maybe you don't have a test light or the time to poke around into the master switch.

Maybe you don't have a factory service manual at hand.

Do you have a finger and a fist available??

Or maybe you just like to see others type in lots of responses to your questions.

Tried beating the door panel in various ocations as instructed. Still no worky

Since beating on it doesn't help check for power at the motor with a test light, if theres no power there check for power at the switch, if it's dead there run a jumper to the switch and see if the windows work.

If there is power at the motor and it doesn't work banging on it then hose it down with electrical cleaner, let it dry and try it again, you should get something if it has power.

If you have power, make sure you have a good ground for the motor.

Has it been slowing down a lot lately or was it working fine and then just stopped?

Check all connections. Make sure you have power where you're supposed to and a good clean ground. Make sure the switch is clean and isn't worn out.

Failing all that, removal, disassembly and cleaning/repairing of the motor is required. You'd be amazed at how simple it really is. I did it when I was a stupid kid in Grade 11.

A word of caution if you get to a point and try to seperate the motor from the regulator chuck it in a vise if it has a flat spring on the regulator or you could lose a body part.

Learned that the hard way when I removed power motors from the regulators on a Cordoba I am parting out. Guess I didnt learn well enough on the first one I took apart,I repeated the mistake on the second one too!!

Biggest problems are broken wiring in the doors bad switches and bad motors. The system is really simple. Two wires go to the motor. One hot one ground. They reverse polarity to make them go up an dowm.Just unplug the motor an put a test light on the 2 wires. It should light in both directions. The wiring is pretty much the same on all Mopar power windows.Rocky
