Please help diagnose my engine problem

Please help diagnose my engine problem - 05/30/08 08:47 PM

I have a Dart with a slant six that doesn't get driven much. I do try to start it every so often but it seems it is getting increasingly difficult to keep running and the exhaust smells terrible. When I go to start it, if I don't let it warm up for a good 10 minutes, it will stall when I put it in gear. Then I can't get it started again. I have to let it sit for a day or so and try again. If I let it warm up, it doesn't stall out when I put it in gear and it will continue to run seemingly O.K. but the exhaust reeks. I would appreciate any suggestions on what may be wrong.

I think we need a little more than that.
Reeks like.....oil, gas, water?

Is this the old one barrel carb or a two?

It reeks like extremely (and I mean extremely) rich fuel but also has a scent unlike anything I have smelled coming out of an exhaust system before. Anything that is around the car that is exposed to the exhaust will reek for days. It had old gas in it that I burned most of out one day when I had it running. I let it run for quite some time to burn up as much of the old gas as possible then I added three or so gallons of fresh gas but it still smells the same. I checked the carb after it stalled and then couldn't start it again and I couldn't see any gas going in when I moved the throttle. Yet if I let it sit until tomorrow morning I'm sure it will start and run fine as long as I let it run for awhile. It seems like it gets fuel initially when I start it but then when I have to start it again it isn't getting any gas.

Checked fuel pressure? Can you blow through your fuel filter? Have you ohmed your plug wires? Last time you have performed basic tune-up? No mention of air filter condition. Ignition coil okay? Don't overlook wire between coil and distributor.

take the carb of and try another one if you have a spare. Check the fuel filter. The fuels flow is stopping for some reason so now its time to start playing and taking things apart. Start at one end of the fuel system and go to the other end.
